Morteza , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

In the tumultuous period following George Floyd’s death, I, Morteza Rafiei, found a profound purpose in my work at MSR Entertainment. The serendipitous encounter with Sidney Brown was a beacon, and our combined perspectives from diverse backgrounds sparked a unique mission. Coming from Iran, I was largely shielded from the deeply entrenched racial issues in the US. This unfamiliarity drove Sidney and me to capture the raw essence of the nationwide protests, hoping to dissect and understand the dynamics at play.

Our journey introduced us to Jia, an activist whose fervor and tales became central to our narrative. Yet, in pursuit of a comprehensive story, Sidney and I sought balance. We believed it was crucial to also relay the perspective of the other side. This intent led us to Kyle, a former police officer who was dismissed from his duties due to his dissent against the prevailing misconduct within his precinct.

Our resultant documentary, “FreedomTown: Not So Black And White,” became a poignant reflection of the nuanced racial dynamics in the US. Over a span of two years, we shadowed Jia and Kyle. Jia’s narrative was a window into the racial prejudices that persist in America, while Kyle’s journey unveiled the convolutions of a system marred by internal discrepancies. Through their contrasting tales, our documentary aimed to provoke thought, urging viewers to empathize with both the protester and the officer. Our emphasis was on highlighting the shared human experiences, encouraging dialogue and mutual respect.

The acclaim “FreedomTown” received in various festivals was not just an accolade, but a testament to our belief in the transformative power of storytelling. Today, fueled by our unrelenting belief in the power of storytelling, we are embarking on an ambitious new journey – the creation of a thought-provoking documentary shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of women’s rights in Iran. Our unwavering commitment to amplify the voices of those on the margins and ignite positive change on a global scale has never been stronger.
