We were lucky to catch up with Morris Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Morris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Growing up wasn’t the easiest. I have 2 other siblings. I did not have a father in the household so my mother played both roles. One of the key things my mother did right was provide structure in our lives. We didn’t have a lot but my mother made sure we had what we needed. I feel as though structure helped with my success and prepared me for life as an entrepreneur. I watched my mother work 3 jobs to make ends meet. She didn’t know it at the time but her hard work passed down to me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I consider myself a blue collar worker. I am a barber by trade, who was able to transition to a new business and brand “Beyond The Clippers” that reaches people who are just like me. I provide opportunities to introduce people with little capital to Real Estate Investing. I specialize in reviving and selling distressed homes, which normally are located in areas that my fellow black Americans live in. I focused on distressed properties because I believe in reinvesting in the areas, which I am familiar and will have the most impact on the community. My goal is to motivate, teach and inspire others to do the same. I bought my first distressed property for $7,500 and I believe that this is doable for the average working person. From the purchase of that home, my journey continued into what is now a million-dollar real estate portfolio.
Through “Beyond The Clippers” I offer one-on-one consulting, project management for home renovation and property locating services for off-market deals. This allows people to get the knowledge needed for their own real estate investment deals.
This journey was definitely not an easy one. I had pitfalls and life events that slowed me down. However, it was all worth it because the one thing about Real Estate is… it has no expiration date!
Through this journey, I have learned how to manage my money in order to become financially free. I have also learned to be patient. Understanding that I had to take things one step at a time and complete one project before starting the next was important to my success. It’s very easy for entrepreneurs to get overwhelmed with ideas and things we believe to be priority. What I have found to be the most vital is the ability to control my time and invest my time where it’s needed most. I am so proud of the accomplishments I have made thus far and my hope is to give others the tools needed to make their goals become reality.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
To be an entrepreneur, resilience is pretty much a requirement. I was so committed to becoming a Real Estate expert that no matter what happened I was determined to obtain my Real Estate license. I actually failed the Real Estate exam twice! Each time, I continued to go back and study and figure out how I could get past this hurdle. Test taking had never been my strong suit all through school, but I knew I had the knowledge it took to be a great agent. On the third try, I passed and it’s been uphill ever since!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I have been out in the field actually doing the work required to be successful in the Real Estate industry. From hosting events to flipping houses, I let my work speak for itself and I have been consistent on my social media platforms with giving out free knowledge and tips to help others get into the real estate business. Through all of these things I have been able to teach, motivate and inspire others to obtain financial freedom just like me.
