We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Moriah Holland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Moriah, appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I think the best thing to show a customer that you appreciate and care about them is learning their name. Once you put in the effort of memorizing people’s names, that’s where the relationship starts and they become more than a customer, they become a friend. Making them feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment they walk in the shop to the moment they leave is how they’re going to keep coming back.

Moriah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My first ever job was in coffee. I worked at Caribou Coffee and immediately fell in love with the industry and it became my dream to open up a shop one day. When Elliott and Maddi opened up this opportunity for my husband Caleb and I to come alongside them and open up Light Heart Coffee, it really was a dream come true! We combined all the little details of things we love from all the shops we’ve been to across the years, and made our shop uniquely so so special to us. We pride ourselves in forming relationships with everyone who walks through our doors, and not keeping it just a customer-staff formality. Of course I have to mention the drinks—our pride and joys! We are constantly brainstorming new drink ideas to make them as beautiful and tasty as possible. Every season we are changing up our specialty menu so that we never fall into a rut of having the same ol’ coffee—it should never be boring! We put so much love into each and every drink and all we want is for people to have an amazing experience and a beautiful place to enjoy their new favorite drink.

How’d you meet your business partner?
We we’re presented this opportunity when visiting Caleb’s brother in Arizona. Elliott picked us up to take us to the airport but we stopped by the space first. He told us their plans to open up a studio space and how they’d like to have a coffee shop in the front. Caleb jokingly said we’d run it for them and Elliott said “seriously?” The rest is history :)
