We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Morgan , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

During the pandemic, I dedicated much time to introspection, contemplating the direction I wanted my life to take. Fortuitously, I could shift gears and teach virtually for the studio I was previously associated with. Additionally, I embraced the opportunity to contribute to a larger cause by working at GE Healthcare, specifically involved in the production of ventilators. Motivated by a desire to impact the world positively, I found myself contemplating a business plan during my downtime at the factory.

Recognizing the limitations inherent in a medical factory environment, where one cannot simply outwork the person ahead, I channeled my energy and free time toward researching and meticulously crafting a business plan. Each day, I delved into various resources, diligently studying the intricacies of formulating a comprehensive strategy. Despite grappling with financial constraints and modest credit, my dedication and unwavering commitment gradually transformed my vision into a tangible reality.

Today, as I enter the fourth year of operations, I am humbled and proud to witness the growth and success of my organization. Within its framework, we have established a nationally touring professional Dance Company, a pre-professional Dance Company, a collegiate-level dance program, and our very own state-of-the-art studio. This achievement stems from the willingness to take calculated risks and place unwavering faith in oneself.

The importance of self-belief cannot be overstated. By daring to take a leap of faith in my abilities and investing copious amounts of effort and time, my aspirations have materialized before me. This journey serves as a reminder that success often stems from embracing the unknown and trusting in one’s capabilities.

Ultimately, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to those who have supported and believed in me throughout this process. The unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of my vision have led to realizing my dreams. Moving forward, I remain steadfast in my resolve to continue taking bold strides, seizing opportunities, and creating a lasting impact within the dance world.

Allow me to introduce myself, Morgan Williams, originally hailing from the vibrant city of Chicago. Growing up in the Southside, where positivity was scarce, I unexpectedly discovered my passion for dance. As a child, I took my first steps into the world of movement, music, and performance through participation in a drill team. However, it was a fateful encounter with the esteemed Joffrey Ballet of Chicago during a visit to my grade school that set my journey ablaze. Their introduction of ballet to our class, coupled with a scholarship to an all-boy dance intensive, ignited an unquenchable fire within me. From that transformative moment, I knew that dancing and performing were my true calling. Even at the tender age of sixth grade, I vividly recall carrying around a composition book, in which I cast my friends as the lead roles in the ballets I envisioned.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of dancing for a diverse array of people and companies. The breadth of my experiences spans captivating opera performances, enthralling concert showcases, and even international engagements in countries like Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Notably, my talent and dedication have also graced the screens of popular television shows such as SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance) and the widely acclaimed Fox series, Empire. Additionally, I have made appearances in music videos, adding yet another dynamic dimension to my artistic repertoire.

Now, at the age of 30, I find myself assuming the esteemed role of Artistic Director within a flourishing dance organization. As we eagerly prepare for our inaugural set of tours in the upcoming season, I find that each passing year brings with it a renewed sense of ambition and an ever-expanding array of dreams. However, at the heart of it all, my ultimate aspiration remains constant: to transform my company into an internationally acclaimed touring dance company.

With unwavering determination, I strive to lead my organization to new heights, captivating audiences around the globe with the artistry and passion that dance has instilled within me. As I embark on this journey, I am grateful for the opportunities that have paved the way and for the support of those who have played a pivotal role in shaping my path.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

As an artist, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my craft lies in the boundless sources of inspiration that shape my art. I find immense joy in the realization that anything and anyone can influence the creative process. This inherent unpredictability imbues my work with an element of surprise and excitement, as I never know what kind of projects and ideas will come my way.

Each day holds the promise of new possibilities and fresh avenues to explore. It is a privilege to wake up each morning knowing that I get to engage in the pursuit of what I am truly passionate about. The ability to pursue my art and express myself through various mediums brings an unparalleled sense of fulfillment and purpose to my life.

This journey as an artist allows me to continually evolve, challenge myself, and grow both personally and professionally.
