We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Swank. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Morgan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Moonscar was the brainchild of myself and my creative partner Blair Allison way back in 2018. At first, it was a means for us to produce and release our own projects, but has since evolved to the creative production hub for all artists and creatives to pitch, workshop, and option their work without the bureaucracy of needing managers and agents to get the foot in the door. We knew there was always a gap for women in particular to take their work to the finish line, so moonscar could fill in the cracks with some of our resources to provide creatives with those services that only big production offices offered. Moonscar evolved as the landscape of film and tv devolved.
Morgan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been involved in entertainment in some kind of way. I went to school in Nashville at Belmont University where a semester in New York had me on internships with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Daily Show. After I graduated I just never really stopped television. I found my niche! I went on to work for Saturday Night Live, The Mindy Project, TURN: Washington’s Spies, American Horror Story, and pitching my own projects with Moonscar. When I got burnt out from the hustle of Hollywood, I really wanted to nurture Moonscar’s mission in a way that creators could feel safe giving their IP to us to workshop and pitch. All of our contracts makes sure that whatever the creator makes with us, they are allowed to keep and have all final day in decisions. Our main tenet for this company was not to push a creator for money and to lead with trust and respect. I think that sets us apart from a lot of people and production companies and why creatives like working with us. That, and we offer grants exclusively for women and indigenous writers.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I have been asked to be paid in NFTs before and I don’t understand them. I don’t like them. I will never understand them. Don’t pay your producer in NFTs! They don’t pay the mortgage.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When you own a business you cannot do everything yourself. Even if you think you can, you can’t. We get our productions funds through curated grants. In order to keep those grants we have to apply and pitch to investors. Im not a grant writer nor am I an expert PowerPoint maker. Sometimes it pays in dividends to get the experts on your team to help when needed.
