We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Schabert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Ever since I was a little girl, I had dreamt of becoming a nurse. I had many interests within the medical field, so I did not have a particular area of nursing in mind. While I was studying to obtain my BSN, RN degree, I started working as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). I was introduced to a lot of skills and knowledge that set me up for success when I became a nurse. Following graduation, my first nursing job was on a PCU (Progressive Care Unit). There, I cared for critical patients – working with complex medication drips, cardiac monitoring, feeding tubes, drains, and more. I loved that this job demanded me to utilize my critical thinking skills and think on my toes; however, my health took a toll in many different ways, and I knew I needed to change my path. Prior to graduation, I was introduced to the aesthetic nursing world. We didn’t study this area throughout nursing school, so I had not given it much consideration. I had always loved everything to do with beauty and skincare, and I actually struggled for a few years with terrible, painful acne. I started doing more research on what becoming an aesthetic nurse all entailed once I realized the PCU wasn’t the best fit for me. I decided to take the leap with the support of family and some close friends and start my own business working as an aesthetic nurse. I obtained additional certification on top of my BSN, RN license in January 2022, and started networking & training with other nurse injectors. In October of 2022, SKINNÈ Med Spa was opened, and I have enjoyed every second being an aesthetic nurse provider. Being able to share my own experiences with my skin health in order to help my patients achieve healthy skin truly fills my cup.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Throughout nursing school, the area of aesthetic medicine is not discussed. It was not until after graduation while I was working bedside at a hospital that I got introduced to this area of nursing. I had always known the medical skincare treatments were out there, but I didn’t know how to go about becoming an aesthetic nurse to be able to provide these treatments to others. I started networking with fellow nurse injectors to gain guidance on how to pursue a career in this industry and also begin building my skills and knowledge. I obtained additional aesthetic nursing certification on my BSN, RN license and started hands on training with nurse providers in the metro area. In October 2022, SKINNÈ Med Spa was born.
SKINNÈ, pronounced “skin,” means “shine,” is located within the luxurious Säga Beauty Collective in downtown St. Peter, MN. Skincare services offered at SKINNÈ range from Botox and Dysport to lip filler and chemical peels. I also carry a medical grade skincare line, Revision Skincare. I want SKINNÈ to be known for its safety and integrity. I will never perform a treatment that I don’t think will be safe. I take educating my patients on each treatment very seriously and like to be totally transparent on cost, downtime, and realistic expectations. These are medical treatments, and I want you to feel comfortable and confident in the plan we create together. I am looking forward to growing the treatment menu this coming year to help you shine in your own skin.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Don’t be stagnant. This is a very autonomous area of nursing, and continuing education is huge in this industry. You never know everything, and there is always something new to learn. Networking goes along with this and is also very important. There is so much we can learn from others, and being open to growing with other professionals in this industry is key for the safety and optimal outcomes of our patients. It is so easy to see others as “competition” in an industry like this, but by working together and putting the safety of our patients at the forefront of our minds, we can become better nurse providers.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Ever since I was a little girl, my dream was to become a nurse. Throughout school, it was hard for me to narrow down the area of nursing I wanted to go into because I liked aspects of every area we studied. Fast forward to today, and I have found the perfect mesh of everything I love – medicine, skincare, and beauty. I would hands down choose the same profession and specialty if I could go back… the only thing I wish would change would be educating nursing students on this area of nursing.
