We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Nagle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Yes! For us, our focus is not only to deliver beautiful photos that our clients fall in love with, but also to make sure they are displaying these photos.
So many photographers just deliver a digital gallery, and send clients on their way. We don’t want to put the responsibility on the client to figure out what to do with their photos and how to display them. That is part of our job.
When we have a photo session or a wedding, we will have a reveal session following to show them their photos in a unique way! This way they aren’t just getting an email stating that their photos are done. We want it to be a whole experience. After they view their photos, then we help them decide what is the perfect way to display photos for them.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
One of my favorite sales stories is actually fairly recent. I find that when being a business owner, you have to be able to make connections with people out in public and strike up a conversation anywhere.
A little over a month ago, I was flying to Philadelphia for a wedding. I had been at the airport early to give myself enough time to get through security and all of that, making it a long day. My flight was delayed and delayed, then eventually canceled. During that time, I had struck up a conversation with a couple sitting close by at the airport. Just something casual about how it’s going to be a long day, etc.
When we finally got on our flight to Philadelphia, they ended up being in the row behind me. We started talking, and I told him what I did, and he ended up telling me about his daughter who owns a business in Nashville as well. He asked me for my card so he could pass it along to his daughter, because she is always looking for a photographer.
By the end of that weekend, I was in an email conversation with him and his daughter, making the introduction. His daughter called me the following week and booked me for a several hour session for her business.
It just goes to show you that running a business is all about connections you make.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The book that has made the biggest impact on my business is The E Myth by Michael E. Gerber. In the book, it talks about the differences in being a business owner, a manager, and someone who just does the tasks. Knowing how to be a business owner is more important than being able to do the actual task. If you don’t do that, you will fail.
