We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Morgan Muchori a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Morgan Danielle’s Closet (soon to be known as Muchori) was born from a desire to help others, as well as myself, feel confident. Clothing helps me express a mood, a vibe, and it sets a tone for how I exist in the world. I am a registered nurse, which has nothing to do with fashion, but it speaks to my desire to serve. I want to help and inspire people to wear elevated looks that they might not have felt like they could wear before. However, the journey to get here was hard, losing my mom, having my son and building a family in the midst of starting this business. After pushing through those obstacles, it proved to my supporters as well as myself that I can overcome anything. I realized I wanted to help others realize that their struggle is not their identity because I learned that my struggle was not mine.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Morgan Muchori. Muchori, my last name originates from Kenya, Africa. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia. I have a background in chemistry, which led me into nursing. I work in the neonatal unit that provides care to premature babies. A love for new life has always pushed me.
My brand was created to help one step into any part of life with a fresh and organic feeling.
Although Morgan Danielle’s Closet, soon to be Muchori, is known for being an online women’s fashion store, the goal is to be able to cater to everyone who loves sustainable fashion.
My brand will be using organic, sustainable, and recyclable materials. As a health care worker, it is imperative for me to provide clothing that doesn’t harm our environment or my supporters. We aim to be an environmentally responsible business.
This sets me apart because if you think about it, the beauty industry is gradually seeing that shift to being “clean” and not using harmful chemicals. Similarly, we are in the process of being a part of this shift in the culture of fashion. I plan to assist in shifting the mindset of my supporters and the fashion industry – away from fast and convenient fashion, but toward supporting quality and sustainability versus convenience and cheapness. This will encourage my supporters to keep their garments for its lifetime, thus, creating a more environmentally responsible consumer. I want my supporters to have quality garments that last through this season in their life.
I am most proud of me initiating this process because I have had a lot of working against me. Being an only child and losing a parent, being far from family as I worked to complete nursing school and becoming a first time mother simultaneously, I am proud of how far I have come and the work I have put into this brand/rebrand. I am fully walking into my CEO mentality and creating a legacy that my son and family will be most proud of.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Upon graduating with my bachelor’s in chemistry in 2018, I always knew I wanted to go into neonatal nursing. I went into nursing school with my four month old during the pandemic, which was a very challenging time for the world. During this pivotal time in my life of me being a nursing student and a new mom, my own mother started having major complications with her cancer diagnosis. These complications caused her to go into hospice. This was the most devastating time in my life. She was only in hospice for less than two weeks before she transitioned unexpectedly. I lost the closest person to me, who had always been there to support every major and minor event in my life. Despite the circumstances, I had to continue to raise my son, maintain my relationship, graduate with my second degree in nursing while also being supportive to my family as we all grieved.
After taking an 8 month break post the loss of my mother, I gained the courage to re-initiate my online clothing business. I began to reintroduce my brand to my supporters and I started to engage with them on a personal level. Today, I have done 3 in-person pop-up events and grew my following on social media platforms to bring people to the cause and movement that I am creating.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A hard lesson that I had to learn was that no one is obligated to help me with anything. It is easy to get comfortable when someone is generously serving you. I used to believe that as friends and family, you should always be there to support them no matter what. Growing up an only child, I have always had that support from my family, however, I had to unlearn this as an adult because we all come with our own needs and struggles. At the end of the day, they aren’t obligated to do anything for you despite what they have done thus far. I’ve learned that you have to go get it for yourself and you can’t blame anyone if you don’t achieve or accomplish your goals.
Moreover, this lesson has aided me in becoming more independent. Having that independent quality has helped me become a better mother, partner and business owner. It reminded me that I am fully capable of accomplishing anything that I put my energy and efforts toward. I have also learned that you have everything you need to live a happy and abundant life. I believe that the Most High God and Universe are one and that they are always on our side. When you believe and put in the work, you can and will have all that you want and desire within your purpose.
