Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Morgan McNeece. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have been making music for over 20 years now. I was self-taught for most of my previous experience. I didn’t decide to do this professionally until about 6 years ago when I began my Bachelor’s in Audio Production through Full Sail University. I had previous experience making music but wanted to know more and develop my skills to be the best at what I do. During my degree, they suggested that I get an internship somewhere but I decided to create my own recording studio to work with local artists and create a legacy of my own. After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I decided to better understand the business of the music industry so I obtained a Master’s degree in Entertainment Business. Throughout this entire time, I have worked at several live music venues so I could network with local artists and better my craft. Mixing in a live environment is much different than the studio because it is immediate and unforgiving if you make a mistake. This can help to make you a better engineer in the studio though. It teaches someone to think quickly on their feet and address issues immediately. Learning how to properly EQ and use just dynamics and faders to make a performance sound great is the most important part of live mixing. The biggest obstacle for me has been getting the word out about my business and sharing my passion for music.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Grim Beard Productions is a full-service recording studio. We offer recording services, mixing, mastering, custom instrumentals, and more. We offer voiceover recording and audiobook editing in addition to the services we offer to our music clients. Not only do we work with local artists who are able to come into the studio but we also offer remote mixing and mastering services for our out-of-state clients. In addition to providing studio services, I also offer freelance live audio services for any live event, including concerts, seminars, and conferences.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about working in this industry is working with other creatives. Being able to help an artist or musician to express their creative vision is rewarding because I am helping them achieve their dreams and passions.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to support artists is to buy their content, go to their shows, share their content with your friends and most importantly, interact with your favorite artists on social media. This lets them know that what they’re doing is seen by fans and the community.
