We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Morgan Mbadugha a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2017, I remember sitting at my desk feeling overwhelmed and unfulfilled. I’d gotten my dream job, working for an amazing company and yet, day in and day out, I found myself less and less motivated in my role. I knew it was time to go back to the drawing board. Then one day, it came to me. THE plan. I felt this still small voice speak to me, guide me along a very strategic and specific path to financial and creative freedom. So, I quit. I bet on myself and what was once a hobby, became my full-time job.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a photographer by trade but I like to think of myself as a storyteller. I learn about my subject, I encourage and edify them. The photo sessions I provide are an experience. What I’ve found is, being in front of the camera is a vulnerable place. One tends to become extremely self-aware, a little nervous, maybe even awkward. So, my job is to put my client at ease, make them laugh, make them comfortable. As a result, the images are authentic, beautiful and compelling. We see ourselves one way, but others see so many amazing facets of who we are and I love to bring that to life through photographs.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I know I was created to create. Doing so is worship for me. There’s a sense of accomplishment I feel when I capture a moment in time in a photo. When my work is in print, or a client’s profile photo, I feel so humbled. I also love that I don’t have to be just one thing. My gifts make room for me. I am multi-hyphenate and it’s empowering.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to see lives enhanced and inevitably changed. I want the people I encounter to feel seen, known, and loved. Whether that’s through a photo session with me, or reading a poem I’ve written, or tuning in to an episode of my podcast, my goal is unity. Unity is so much easier to accomplish when we all are driven by love, care, and respect for one another.
