We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Mayfield recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Morgan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As early as I can remember, I wanted to express myself through art and music. I have always had a gift of art from sketches to paintings…even singing, guitar, keyboards and of course drums. I didn’t need many friends growing up because I always had an aspiration to create through art and music.
The process always feels like it is in essence, mine to do with what I wish. Freedom is a word to describe the feelings that are entwined with the creation of art or music.
It’s extremely difficult for one to express him or herself in todays society of everyone having issues with an-others belief or opinions. However through art and music, it seems still acceptable. Ultimately, this is the reason I feel the desire to be artistic and musical.
Morgan , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Morgan Mayfield, I am 43 yrs. old. I am a father, husband, son, brother and artist. Finding time to do what one has a passion for is honestly the key to happiness and success in what one’s passions might be. Other than multiple forms and mediums of art, as of late music has been a big part of my free time. I play drums in a metal band called Phantomstone. We are the epitome of what rock and metal stand for in a sense of expression and rebellion. I have played in many bands before, however, never had the sense of true expression through my instrument until Phantomstone.
We have been a full band for almost 3 years now and have had much success within the scene as being a high energy, got something to say and just down right mean style. Our style can be related to bands such as Slayer, Pantera and Megadeth even though on our last EP release Azrael, we have turned up the heat a bit showcasing a bit more heavier nature of our capabilities.
Phantomstone has big plans for the years to come and just want to keep creating music. It is in our blood and purpose to shred the world, 1 listener at a time.
Apart from being the percussionist of Phantomstone, I am also the main artist in the band, creating illustrations and images for our upcoming albums and media. The art can be expected to be obscure and relevant to the themes found in album or songs.
Please be on the lookout for upcoming singles etc. coming soon as we keep pumping material out every year.
You can find us on all platforms as well as checking out our website at Phantomstone.net
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
We are a heavy band. This either attracts people, or quite frankly scares people. With the nature of our lyrics being driven with an angrier tone of delivery it is easy for people to misinterpret our vision. Well, to put it clearly, we want to be a voice for the unvoiced, an outlet for those who have had enough of a system that constantly belittles and degrades the true valor of man. We want to be a weapon to regain some hope and let people know it’s okay to speak your mind and to be who you want to be despite of the naysayers.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
As far as being a metal band, maybe more support just in the overall spectrum of mainstream music. I meet people quite frequently that have never even heard of our style of music because of the lack of exposure to it. It seems todays hits are just more of the same, not so good rap, or sex idols that honestly in our opinion, don’t have much of a unique style at all, let alone musical talent. It stems to culture I guess, what’s hot and what’s not, however there should be more opportunities for artists like us to achieve the same greatness as these popular mainstream icons through more American airplay, commercials, free exposure, grants etc. to aid in the discovery of other styles of music out there.
