Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Morgan Levy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Morgan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Something that I try to live by in my life and in my practice is the concept of being “good enough” and not perfect. As a busy professional, sometimes it can feel really easy to get caught up in the pressure to perform and to constantly be chasing the next milestone. We always want to do our best, but sometimes we get so stuck on that idea that we overwork ourselves to the point of being burned out. We also might have a tendency to want to be the best for everyone around us because we are afraid of disappointing the people that we care about. When my clients get stuck on that idea, we talk about different spaces in their life where they can be “good enough” (not perfect) and still achieve the result that they are looking for. They don’t have to be “perfect,” “indestructible,” or emotional-less (because they view showing emotions as being weak) in order to maintain their success. I first noticed and learned about this concept when I was early on in my career as a therapist. There was a lot of pressure to prove myself as a therapist by showing my clients that I was able to help them. However, getting caught up in that pressure made it difficult to provide them with the support that they needed. Fortunately, I was in therapy myself at the time (I believe that anybody who wants to be a therapist should have experience being in therapy themselves) and I increased my own self-understanding of my patterns. I learned the importance of acceptance and recognizing that “good enough” is always better than “perfection.” Once I was able to do that, I was able to be present with my clients and provide them with the support that they needed rather than just focusing on my own performance.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Dr. Morgan Levy, a licensed psychologist, and I’m passionate about helping high-achievers and professionals learn how to embrace all parts of their identity without giving up their drive, motivation, and perseverance. In addition to my work providing education, virtual programs, and workshops in the areas of mindfulness, perfectionism, and burnout, I see therapy clients in my virtual private practice in Florida.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Fun fact about me – my dream job is being a time traveler! I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of moving through time and space (I’m a huge fan of Doctor Who) and learning about people and their stories. Since that doesn’t exist (as far as I’m aware), being a psychologist is the logical next step! I love being able to sit with people and truly listen and learn about their own stories and their history. I love working with them to uncover the deep roots that lead to their patterns and helping them understand themselves so that they can live a life that feels truly meaningful to them.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The ability to be in the present moment and accept things as they are without trying to change them. It can feel really easy to try to get rid of uncomfortable emotions or feelings that are painful, but the reality is as humans, we are complex and it’s natural to experience a wide range of emotions. The more we try to push away the discomfort, the larger it builds up until it can really harm us. It’s so important to learn how to be comfortable with discomfort.
