We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I came up with the idea of my business, Essays & Mo, by first having a passion for writing. As a young child, I would often write my feelings down in a journal. I loved them so much as a young girl, I would want one every birthday! As I transitioned through my undergraduate to my graduate years, I learned more ways to write professionally and more swiftly. I use to help my colleagues with papers from undecided majors to engineering. I also found a love for advocating for myself and getting the career I want to have. Some of us work hard to still not move up in our workplace or get constant no’s from employees. This is where my love for resumes and cover letters came as well. When creating my business website I was just playing around, when I showed a coworker who encouraged me to just GO FOR IT, I have had the pleasure to help over 60 customers.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Morgan and I’m an experienced educator who loves to spend time with family, my three-year-old daughter Navi, and anything that involves having a great time! I got into this industry after COVID hit and saw how possible it is to have your own business. I received my first essay and resume request and was super nervous! This job is very time-consuming and not always easy, especially during slow weeks or when summer school is taking place. I do my best to post on my social media accounts about different discounts and real-life customer reviews. It can be difficult at times if a customer does not receive a good grade but in that aspect, I will offer a partial refund or a discount on the next order they need, if not free. I aim to do my best is why I require a rubric or outline if necessary, but is not always clear or available. Not the customer’s fault and I am very understanding of that. My business is not super unique but I know a lot of people who need help with the services I provide, and nothing makes my day more. I am most proud of the consistency of my customers or when they have recommended a friend or family member to me! That is how business grows and I am so appreciative of that the most.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In the future, I am looking to become an advocate for education. I want to be a part of the senate fighting for educational policies and finding ways to earn more finances for schools in urban communities. I want to be able to advocate for all schools but the more I write, the more I research, and the more connections I make I feel will lead me to where I want to be long-term. I am currently getting my Doctorate in Public Administration also to help. I feel this process will allow me the tools I need for future networking, grant writing, policy accuracy, and the understanding of education within my teaching career.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
People will not just trust you because you have a business. So payment wise I require a deposit which is usually half of the entire balance and then the rest must be sent before the document is emailed to them. I had to find ways to incorporate safety and advocate that if there is anything needing to be fixed or changed that I will do that IF it was communicated beforehand. I had to unlearn late communication as well. When it comes to assignments or applying for a job, people like to know you are working on it and being accurate about when things are due. These were important lessons to allow my customers to feel like they can trust me and that this business is accurate, especially the way people scam in today’s society.
