We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Hutchings recently and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
There will always be someone better than you! This is by far one of the greatest things my mother has ever taught me. To some reading it on paper may sound cold or harsh but for me, coming from a loving mother who was teaching her son about losing it meant the world. Early in my T-ball days, I lost a game of no significant importance but I was devastated that we lost. As all great mothers do she comforted me with the easy things; its okay son, there will be another game, don’t worry about it, you did great. All of this fell on deaf ears as I focused on what a failure I had been during the game. Until she told me those eight words; There will always be someone better than you Morgan. I looked up in disbelief that my own mother would tell me this is just the beginning of my failures in the long career as a T-ball superstar I was destined to become! She expanded by telling me that the world is full of people who have amazing talents and skills and some people are going to just be ‘gifted’ at certain sports. Always someone stronger, faster, smarter.
She then told me that no matter how much talent or giftedness a person has they will never beat hard work and heart. Just because there will be people out there in the world who are better at something than me doesn’t mean you can’t go out there and compete and work hard towards what you want.
Obviously, there is no championship league for T-ball and I never made it to Yankee Stadium but them message stuck with me into my professional career. I’ve maintained an attitude of hard work and heart throughout my entire life. Playground or organization there will always be someone who has gifts we can’t all obtain. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t put in hard work and still find success. Hard work and heart, beat talent every single time! Every promotion I’ve ever got, raise I’ve received the degrees and certifications I’ve held, and every the two books I’ve written. I would have never accomplished any of those things if I’d just decided to concede to not being the best writer or best salesperson.
I’m thankful that my mom had the understanding and communication to share this life lesson with me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into coaching medical model practices because I loved seeing the results of taking a struggling business and helping them turn its ship around. It is so satisfying when you meet people who aren’t communicating well and you help them find commonalities and work through problems together. Building teams and initiating teamwork is my single greatest passion in life. Even for organizations that are doing great but having a hard time pushing through their current plateau it always has something to do with the people. Solving people’s problems is the greatest gift I can give business owners and I love it!
I’ve been fortunate enough to write two books now about communicating inside of an organization and the 7 laws of leadership I’ve used throughout my entire career.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I tell everyone I work with Alignment Accelerates Action. As business owners, we all want to run at full speed all the time. Sometimes it feels like we are dragging the people in the organization behind as we floor it up to 120 MPH. There is an old saying that if you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go with others. This is so true for all of us! If you want your people to run with you and accelerate their growth and achievement you have to have alignment. Sharing your visions, core values, and success with others it helps them stay aligned with your mission. And alignment accelerates action which means the more aligned your team is the great impact they can make on the organization.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Follow up follow up follow up! I can’t stress enough that if you don’t have your follow-up sales funnel automated you are losing out on some serious time, energy, and revenue for the company. On average it takes 7-12 touches in the marketing world to get a consumer interested in whatever it is you do. The average closing rate on a first sales phone call is below 30% so that means by not following up with your clientele after the fact you are losing out on a whopping 70% of potential revenue. What would it do for your business if you just closed an additional 20% of that via follow-up?
Make sure you build follow-up funnels that include touching base with that person via text, email, and physical mail. Don’t just rely on email because the open rate and opt-out rates are terrible!
