Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Morgan Hamilton-Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Morgan, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
2024 was a big year for me. It was the year that I decided to jump into freelancing, trying to be a Producer and work in the creative industry in almost any aspect I could.
I hit the ground running. I worked on multiple passion projects for friends of mine. I Produced 4 projects written and directed by women, 2 of which were the first script they’d written. Plus I was able to help on a feature that a good friend of mine had been trying to make for nearly a decade.
I can’t pinpoint which project I’ve worked on recently was the most impactful to me, but I am very honored to spearhead or assist artists in telling the stories that mean so much to them. That is a feeling that doesn’t come around very often.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been making movies since 2012. I’ve worked in nearly every aspect of film, starting as an Actor/Director, and now finding my feet as a Producer, Casting Director & Consultant. I’ve made over 30 short films, a feature, and a web series, which was my debut project under my title, Tricky Ink Productions in 2017. I quit my 9-5 job last year to pursue my passion, and learn the business side of filmmaking. I became a DBA during COVID, and decided to take a backseat in directing, and focus on community building, and helping other artists tell their stories. I now host networking events, I just started a Discord Server for SF Bay Area filmmakers. I have a newsletter, I’m building my actor database, and I’m getting back into writing.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I really love the community I have around me now. There are multiple different avenues I wish I had known about earlier. Even just a few years ago. Networking events, certain Facebook groups, etc. I’ve been immersed in the community for a couple years, but I feel as though I got a late start.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Whenever I work with actors or other creatives, I always try to get at least a photo or video of the whole experience, so I have something to share on social media. And luckily, Instagram has tagging/collaborative functions that make it easier to spread your audience. I’ve been reached out to a lot from people saying “Hey I saw you just worked with so and so, I’d love to talk to you about this project.”
That being said, social media has it’s downsides and I’ve definitely found myself in a space that I needed to take a break for my mental health.
