We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Geyer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It all started with pies. Strange right? How does one go from baking pies out of their house to then being an influencer to then starting a videography business? Well to back up a bit, I was working in oral surgery full time and for a side hustle, I baked pies. As we all know know, a successful business typically is using social media to promote and that’s exactly what I started doing with my at home micro bakery. I would decide what pies I would offer for the week and post that on my Facebook page and instagram. Once I made the pies, I would spend so much time taking pictures and videos. It started to be the part I enjoyed the most.
I continued doing that for a year or two and then had my second baby and became a full time Stay at Home Mom. Baking with kids around is not easy so I started to just take pie orders here and there. Instead, I was spending more of my time creating videos of recipes. I finally had a video go viral and that was the really the start of content creation. I started to find social media as a outlet for me. I have always been a very creative person but once I became a Mom, my time and resources became for limited for what I could do to create. So I started to just post really anything. I would post easy family meals that I tried, a Mom hack, activities that I did with my kids, hidden gems around the state and products that I used around the house. I am a simple and sarcastic person and I have always wanted my social media pages to reflect that. You see too much fake stuff out there. It’s refreshing to see a regular house and a regular person. I love trying a new activity with my kids and having fun with them but then posting about the activity of my social media pages for other parents to try out with their own kids. This allows me to connect with other parents and be able to communicate with them. I have met a lot of great people through social media and even strong friendships.
After I started doing content creation for a few years, I started to land brand deals and provide for my family when I could. I would lay in bed at night and come up with my idea of how I was going to film the video for the brand and have it planned out for the next day. Once I had a chance to film, I would then spend the next night in bed editing. I love editing. Its so enjoyable to me, and I feel like most people despise that part. Then one day, my husband and I went on a date to an Italian restaurant and had a martini or two. We started to talk about brands I was working with and how I was going to film the videos. Then the conversation snowballed into started our own videography business. We could film long and short form videos for brands and businesses local to the area, weddings, family events and so much more. So, the next day we started a business plan and decided on a business name, Three Acre Films. I knew I had a ton of learning to do but was excited for the adventure.

Morgan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For folks who may not have read about you before, can you please tell our readers about yourself, how you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc

What type of products/services/creative works you provide, what problems you solve for your clients and/or what you think sets you apart from others. What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
Please provide as much detail as you feel relevant as this is one of the core questions where the reader will get to know about you and your brand/organization/etc
For content creation I provide a service for a business or brand. This means that I create a video or post explaining/showing why a certain product or brand works great for me. I love doing content for brands because typically you can shoot it however you like and I’m able to show my personality through the video. I personally feel as though that this is really the new wave of marketing. Most people are on social media scrolling and not even realizing that some of the videos that they’re watching are paid by brands. This also means that someone like me who is a Mom living a typical midwest life is showing how I am can use certain products in my everyday life. I have a lot of fun with it.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come within content creation. I had absolutey no idea about how any of it worked when I started. I remember when a brand asked me for my media kit and a business proposal and I literally didn’t know what that meant. I also had zero marketing experience before this but now I understand way more and know the lingo. Fortunately, I have met others within the same shoes as me and I am able to ask questions if I still don’t understand. I am way more confident with it now too. When I first started, I’d be embarrassed to post things because of course everyone can see it. I also wouldn’t want to tell people what I did because it wasn’t a “really job” in my mind. But now I don’t care what others think. I have made a career out of it and have made a lot of connections along the way.
What I want potential clients to know is that I am experienced in content creation but I’m always open to working with new brands and making a budget for a campaign work. I want to try and work with as many local brands and businesses as possible.
When it comes to my new videography business, I am looking to create short and long form content for brands and businesses. This would allow for them to post the videos on social media or on a website. I am looking to start dabbling into weddings too.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Everyone will tell you that you need a niche when it comes to being successful on social media and I just don’t think that’s true. Now, are there times when it makes sense to post relatively the same things? yes. For example, if you only share about hiking spots in Wisconsin then it doesn’t make sense to then randomly post your favorite makeup products. But for me I started posting things I thought were fun or interesting in my life. For the first 6 months of my social media experience I only posted recipes. But then one day I decided to post something else that I was doing and it just started to snowball from there. I’ll post a easy family dinner recipe I tried and then the next day I’ll post me cleaning out the chicken coop. There are no rules when it comes to what you should or shouldn’t do with your social media page. For me, I think staying consistent is key though. I would post every other day if not everyday. But it’s important to post content that valuable vs. just posting so you can say you did.
But, it just takes one video to take off and start getting traction on your social media pages. It’s also really important to not compare yourself to others on social media. Just because someone has 100K followers and you only have 100 followers, doesn’t mean you’re not posting valuable content.
I also used to get so embarrassed about what other people would think about me when I would post something. Or what people would say if I told them I do content creation. Now, I don’t care. I’ve made a brand and career for myself out of this and I genuinely enjoy it.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
