We recently connected with Morgan Elise and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Morgan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with important influences in our lives. Is there a historical figure you look up to?
Much of my work is deeply influenced by the timeless writings of Jane Austen and Emily Dickinson—two remarkable women who left a lasting impact on history. Their works, though simple on the surface, beautifully explore the complexities of life. As a documentary photographer, I focus on capturing the true, unfiltered love of each of my clients. My mission is to tell their stories with honesty and to highlight the distinct beauty of every love I have the privilege of documenting.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi friend! I’m Morgan Elise!
Austin, TX based wedding photographer.
I feel like many people get anxious when they hear “documentary photographer.” This image of me yeeting you in front of the camera with no direction, and shouting “DO STUFF!”.
No. I use my time on our initial call to gather as much information as possible about you, your love story, and your vision.
I then curate my work to reflect an accurate representation of YOU.
I will be guiding and directing you every step of the way. You will never have to worry about posing yourself with me.
I am a firm believer in “less is more.”
I am not interested in stiff posing, excessive props, or forced smiles.
The last thing I want is for you to look back on your photos and think: “Why do I look so uncomfortable?”
I want you to be in an environment that brings out your authentic self.
After almost 15 years of practice, educational courses, and pushing myself to learn and grow, I can confidently say you will be pleased with your photos.
I’m a Leo and an empath. I pride myself in my ability to SEE you and give you an experience that will have you feeling and accepting your highest self. Photography has always been about more than just money for me. This is my passion, heart, soul, and platform to help others grow in their confidence.
I want you to leave our session accepting and claiming YOUR power.
In another life, I am convinced I was a comedian. I have found a way to balance professionalism and pure feralness. I have failed at my job if I can’t keep you laughing and having fun throughout your session. I am not your girl if you’re not a fan of being hyped up for hours on end.
I promise there will be no silence- I’m a full-time talker.
In short, I love what I do, and I want to tell your story authentically.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Nearly two years ago, I found myself navigating an unexpected divorce. At first, being a divorced wedding photographer felt like something I couldn’t openly discuss. I didn’t want my clients to think I viewed marriage negatively or bring any kind of negative energy to their special day. But when I began sharing my story on my business pages, I was met with overwhelming support and kindness. Many people confided in me about their own experiences with divorce, which created a space for more open and vulnerable conversations with my clients. In many ways, my divorce has deepened my appreciation for love and weddings. I often find myself moved to tears on wedding days—not out of sadness for my own experience, but out of joy for witnessing such beautiful, tender love. I am so thankful that this is my job, and I feel truly blessed.
How did you build your audience on social media?
It may sound cliché, but my advice is simple: be yourself. Over the years, I’ve learned that the more authentic I am online, the more I attract the clients who truly align with me. When I first started my business at sixteen, I tried to present a version of myself online that I thought would attract clients, but it didn’t feel genuine, and I didn’t feel like myself. I also didn’t attract any clients.
I’m deeply spiritual, always seeking growth and healing in my personal life, and I openly share parts of that journey online. By embracing who I truly am and where I am on my journey, I’ve connected with so many wonderful people and built meaningful relationships. I’ve realized that the more I show up for myself, the better I can show up for my clients.
Of course, I’ve raised a few eyebrows in the business world along the way. I’ve been told many times what I should and shouldn’t say online. But here’s the thing—everything I’ve been advised not to share is actually a core value of my business: showing up as your authentic self. My authentic self is queer, an advocate for women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights, and yes, I drop the occasional “fuck.” I speak in TikTok sounds, I laugh a lot, and when needed, I can also know when to be serious. For the first time in my life, I love who I am, and I’m done hiding that.
