We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Defilippis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
When I was 12 years old, I did a project in school about a career I thought would be enjoyable; I chose photography. That’s when my fascination with this form of art began. I decided to pursue photography at a young age, and I have been working hard at it ever since. I thought to myself, “why can’t I turn this into a viable career?” And the answer was, there was no reason I COULDN’T. Photographing weddings and couples sets my heart on fire, and makes me feel so deeply. I knew that this endeavor was worthwhile for me because I am SO passionate about what I do, what I create, and the incredible couples that I get to know. I can’t think of any higher honor than to be a tourist in someone’s life, to capture their love so honestly and purely.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As my interest in this art began to grow, I was constantly learning and trying new things within my work. I came to the realization that I really love photographing couples, because I am a sappy romantic at heart. In 2017, I photographed my first wedding. Since then, I have been photographing couples in love in some of the coolest places, and I truly couldn’t think of a better “job” to have. I now have almost 3 years of full-time wedding and couples photography under my belt, and I’ve never been more confident that this is the work for me. I strive to truly get to know the couples that I have the privilege to photograph, and learn their relationship from the inside out. Every couple is different, and that’s the magic of this job. Getting to tell someone’s love story through photography is an honor that I can’t even put into words, and something that I’ll forever be grateful to do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative in my field is getting to be a part of people’s stories, and all of the stories that I get to know are about love. A lot of times, I will see people’s relationships start to bloom, until they create a whole garden so to speak. Sometimes it starts with photographing a couple when they’re dating, then engaged, then their wedding, and into when they have kids. This whole journey was based on their love and what they build together, and that is one of the coolest things I have the opportunity to witness. I’ll never get tired of learning about people’s love stories.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This might seem simple, but just be a good human. The right people will find you. I’ve come to realize that my biggest source of new clients comes from referrals from previous clients or other vendors that I’ve been able to work with over the years. I want the people that I get to know to feel like they’ve made a friend in me, and I want to be able to feel the same with them. I think having that connection in this line of work, both with clients and other people in the industry, is what helps you to build a good reputation.
