We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Conner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
Every now and then, I handpick a nonprofit cause and dedicate 100% of the profits from sales on that specific day to support it. Despite being a small business, at MOCO Fragrances, I’m all about lending a helping hand and showing support to causes and organizations that hold personal meaning. Some of the nonprofits MOCO Fragrances has proudly supported include The Trevor Project, the ACLU, The Native American Rights Fund, The Last Prisoner Project, and Exodus Refugee. When it comes to choosing a cause to support, my priority is to stand with those who are underserved, underprivileged, or going through challenging circumstances.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Back in 2018, MOCO Fragrances came to life fueled by my love for design, my curiosity about entrepreneurship, and my dedication to sustainability. I started off with something practical and useful—candles that I could enjoy in my own home. Candle making was a hobby that didn’t require a huge investment, so it seemed like the perfect starting point. Fast forward five years, and I’ve grown a genuine passion for the art of fragrance, constantly expanding my knowledge and skills in this craft. It’s been an incredible journey of discovery and appreciation for the wonderful world of scents.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Being active on social media and simply showing your face helps give a personal touch to the business and lets people see the face behind it. It’s a great way to connect with online clients who may not have met you in person. Followers get a glimpse of the passion driving your business!
Additionally, by establishing brand values and actively embodying your beliefs, your people will find you. Moreover, when you establish your brand values and genuinely live by your beliefs, your audience will naturally gravitate towards you. It’s not just about the products or services you offer, but the underlying purpose and passion that drive your business. People connect with the “why” behind what you do, and that’s what truly resonates with them.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Luckily, I’ve been able to fund my business all by myself. When I started out, I set up a separate bank account just for my business. I tossed in about $500 from my personal account as a starting point. After that, any money I made from the business went straight into that account, and I only spent what I earned. It was a straightforward way for me to keep tabs on my finances without getting caught up in complicated spreadsheets and number crunching.
As I’ve navigated this small business journey, I’ve made sure to keep my full-time job to stay financially stable. While it would be fantastic to rely solely on the profits from my business someday, I’m a cautious soul who prefers taking things at a steady and sustainable pace.
