We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Combs, with her business partner Kendra DuPont. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan and Kendra below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Over the course of 2018/2019, Kendra and I worked closely with artists while remaining independent. We had this wild idea one late night while talking on the phone about starting our own publication. We brainstormed possible names while laughing about how absurd it would be if we actually did it. It was thus that insomnia music magazine was born. Insomniacs as we are, this seemed to be a fitting title. “A magazine for the restless” meant that we could post at any time, which, as we are now global, remains true to this day.
We feel that this magazine has enabled us to reach new heights and create a unique platform for our readers to enjoy. We are proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to continuing this journey of creating a publication that resonates with the insomniacs of the world.
Morgan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As working mothers who put their hearts and souls into their careers, both Kendra and I put our heart and soul into what we do in our everyday lives. As a result of this, I would have to say that our most proud accomplishment was becoming an international publication. As you can see, we are a small publication composed mainly of women from all over the world, which makes us unique. As a result, something like going global and being very popular in the United Kingdom was hard to fathom at the beginning. Especially being that we come from small towns in Indiana and Kentucky ourselves, it is especially important to us. I remember when Kendra and I were first starting out on our venture of becoming a publication we had no expectations, other than the fact that it was ours to do with as we saw fit. There are a number of photographers, including ourselves, who cover local shows because we think that all bands deserve to have publicity when they are starting out (bands and photographers). We hope that we will be able to provide more journalism pieces to our site in the future, and we are looking forward to it. We want to become a platform that provides thoughtful, meaningful content and a place for people to find information about the music scene. We want to give a voice to those who don’t have one and help to create a positive culture around music. We believe that music can bring people together and create understanding, so we are dedicated to making sure our content reflects this mission. We strive to make sure that everyone can have a chance to be heard and that our content reflects a diverse range of opinions. We hope to make a difference by bringing more voices and ideas to the table.
Kendra, What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is the ability to create art that others enjoy that makes this job most rewarding to me. Being able to capture so many different people doing what they love in their purest form is a wonderful experience. It is the feeling of connection and community that comes along with creating something that someone else finds value in that brings me the most joy. Knowing that I can bring a smile to someone’s face or create a beautiful moment in time for them to cherish is what brings me the most satisfaction.
How’d you meet your business partner?
It was probably 2014 when I joined a Facebook group for photographers and met a photographer who lived near Kendra. That was the beginning of history! Although we have gone through so much separately, we have always been together. The two of us have supported each other in our own photography journeys over the years, but it felt like a good time to collaborate. So, we decided to combine our creative forces and take some amazing photos! That’s when we realized we had to call ourselves the “Dynamic Duo”! With our shared passion for photography, our bond grew and so did our ideas. We decided that it was time to finally come together and create something truly unique, creating something that could only be made with two creative minds. We knew that we had to work together to make our vision a reality. So, we got to work, and the rest is history. We created something beautiful that we both could be proud of.
