We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Morgan Clay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Morgan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for The Cabana Club was born out of a terrible beach day with my husband. We live 20 minutes from some of the best beaches in America but never enjoy them. One day I woke up determined to have a proper beach day. We packed up the car with our chairs and ugly umbrella and hit the road. We got to the beach, found parking, and lugged all of our stuff out. On the walk out we realized we forgot water, forgot a speaker, and our phones were about to die. Hot start. We spent the next 15 minutes yelling at each other while we set up the umbrella. Five minutes after we finally settled in our umbrella blew away. I was immediately reminded why we don’t go to the beach. None of that was fun. We sat there for a few minutes, defeated, and then headed out.
On the drive back it hit me: what if someone did all the heavy lifting for us so we could just show up and actually enjoy the beach? It was one of those lightbulb moments, perfectly timed with the whole Covid situation as I was figuring out my next move. I put together a power point presentation to present the idea of The Cabana Club to my husband and a few friends at our dining room table. A few weeks later, we had the LLC sorted and The Cabana Club was born.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I struggled through my 20’s trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. My parents are entrepreneurs and really wanted me to pursue something on my own, I just never knew what. Prior to Covid I ran a very small social media marketing business. We had a few clients and I enjoyed the work, but ultimately it didn’t work out. The failure of that business timed up with Covid and put me in a tough place. I had no idea what I was going to do. Fortunately, I was able to distract myself with the purchase of our first home, a 100 yr old fixer-upper, while I figured out my next step. Once the idea for The Cabana Club came I was really able to channel that social media marketing and branding experience in to a business of my own. I think that’s what sets us apart. Our cabanas and umbrella setups are not only practical for the beach (with everything you could possibly need while you’re out there) but they’re also pretty damn cute, which really elevates the experience.
The Cabana Club has truly been my baby. I’ve poured everything I had in to getting it started. I have always wanted to focus to be on the guest and how we can make their experience of going to the beach the absolute best and most relaxing it can be. From the first time they visit our website I want a seamless and easy experience.
I think the practicality mixed with the aesthetic allows people to trust us with celebrating their most important life events. It really is a great way to celebrate a birthday, bachelorette, post-wedding day, proposal, etc. Literally nothing makes me happier than people enjoying our beautiful beaches with their closest friends and family. The vibes are magical and I never take that for granted.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We have really focused on customer service and creating the best possible experience for our guests. I am really proud of all of our 5 star reviews on google. It means so much to me that people take their time to review our business and give us positive feedback! I feel like the reviews really speak for themselves and show new potential clients how much we really do care.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Google, social media, and bachelorette party planning businesses are our greatest sources of new clients! We are unique in that 75% of our business comes from tourists. That means we have to constantly find ways to reach people who may not know a lot about the area. Don’t sleep on Tik Tok either! All you need is a viral tik tok videos and you’d be so surprised what happens to your business!
