We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Chrisman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
My business partner and I have worked hard over the past 1.5 years to build the welcoming business we now own and operate. We ensure all clients feel safe and welcome in our salon space. We have countless ally stickers and flags, speak openly of our beliefs in the rights of others, and remind every client who comes in to treat others with kindness. It all starts with one single person. Clients leaving with a fresh insite or new opinion is what we love. An open mind and an open heart.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from a smaller town on the Central Coast of California. I met my husband in high school and the rest is history with him. After he joined the military, we were stationed in Colorado. I was struggling heavily with my mental health after leaving what felt like everything behind in my home town, my husband encouraged me to follow what seemed like a silly dream of doing hair. I have always loved the beauty of hair, vivid colors specifically, but never took the step to pursue it as a real career. With his support & encouragement, I started cosmo school full time. I went into it with the goal of creating a safe space to help others feel beautiful in their skin, and it was there I met my best friend and business partner, who shares the same mission as I do.
After two years of working in separate salons, we decided it was time to join forces and open our own salon suite. We are an alternative space / goth style suite that specializes in natural nails and vivid color. I believe what sets us apart is our deep rooted love for what we do for others. We find so much joy in watching our clients grow as people as we get them in our chair. We love creating a safe space for people to be themselves fully and truly without judgment and receive full love from us. We are here to make you feel beautiful and comfortable in your skin, period and point blank.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When i started in the industry, I struggled with not ‘softening’ my edges or just forming myself to be someone I wasn’t in order to build clientele. I was gaining clients that didn’t feel like the best fit and I wasn’t happy behind the chair. After a long talk with a favorite client, I was reminded as to why she continued to rebook – for me. She enjoyed me and our time. I had to rewire my brain and learn that it’s okay if someone doesn’t enjoy me, there will be someone else. I continued to be myself and have my odd decor and f bombs and my clientele built itself full of bad ass clients who appreciate me for who I am. My biggest advice for others is to be yourself and continue to do so. Be true to you and your heart. Your clients will find you.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner and I met in cosmetology school. We had a teacher we both adored and were close with who constantly told us we would be great friends. But we were just awkward gals and never acted on it. Until one day, in class during our nail portion, I walked up to her, sat down, and asked for a fill on my acrylic nails. I couldn’t afford a fill at the time and we had time to kill, so why not? Throw on some nail art, to boot. She has done my nails ever since and the rest is history. We have been there for each other through thick and thin during the years we’ve been friends and I couldn’t ask for a better business partner.
