We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Burgard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Morgan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on was my first abstract collection for my first art showcase. At the time I didn’t know it, but looking back I see the importance and significance of the art that I showcased.
I was pulled out of high school to undergo electroconvulsive therapy, also known as shock therapy. The years proceeding that were extremely difficult because of the stigma associated with it. I lost a lot of my memory, which made me feel disconnected from the people I was close with, along with other things. Shortly after that, I had back surgery. I was stuck in bed for months, had no friends/ways to connect with anyone or anything. That’s when I picked up a paintbrush. I found it impossible to express myself through verbal language, but I was able to express my thoughts and feelings through the abstract.
Through a little encouragement and impulsiveness, I had the opportunity to showcase my work. That show was my first time genuinely connecting with people since before electroconvulsive therapy. It paved a path to express myself and connect with others in an honest and vulnerable way, which I was missing for a very long time.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an abstract artist and center my work around emotions, feelings, and thoughts. I strive to show the importance of self expression and connection through my art. While some people can connect with the raw abstract work, others find joy in familiar concepts and shapes. I combine silhouette-type illustrations with my abstract work to create a final product as well.
I showcase my art to provide a space to explore colors, textures, and shapes in a new way.
I also put these images and my abstract pieces on everyday items, like journals, mugs, wall décor, and apparel to provide a sense of honest joy in everyday life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission driving my creative journey is to encourage people to engage in art in a mindful way. I think a lot of people don’t think they are “creative,” so they stay away from doing anything creative/artistic. However, art is so crucial for our minds and bodies. It’s a path that changes sometimes, but the overall mission stays intact.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to connect with others through my art. It can be difficult for me to connect with people on a lot of other things. It is such a wholehearted feeling when I am able to talk about my art to people who are inspired, curious, and open to it.
