We recently connected with Morena Hockley and have shared our conversation below.
Morena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Life as a creative person can feel very lonely. You wonder if your work will be well received. Will people understand you? Will you make any money with this? Creating is easy when you follow your heart. Opening yourself to the public…especially by selling your work…is riskier.
I wouldn’t be considered goth, but my friends know I am a person who loves Halloween and all things spooky. I always have, even if it isn’t obvious just by looking at me. Over the last few years I’ve embraced that passion and taken a risk by signing up to have a booth at a variety of witchy and paranormal themed events. The result? I found my niche.
Just two weeks ago I had one of my best weekends ever at LoneStar Paracon. My sales were great but, more importantly, my work was appreciated. I loved hearing visitors tell me that my booth was their favorite. Others came back more than once, to admire and to shop. It made my heart happy to hear that my items were unlike anything they had seen before.
In a world of look alikes, don’t be afraid to be yourself. You won’t fit in every where, but you will find where you belong and were your craft is appreciated.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Morena, and I’m a content creator and creative designer. What does that mean exactly?
Part of my creative business is marketing. I work with craft brands and businesses to make their products and events stand out. This work includes logo creation, graphic design, video tutorials, and blog posts. I work with my clients to create what they need to showcase their products and services.
The other part of my business is making. I enjoy using thrifted finds to create new and unique gifts and home decor primarily. I sell these items on Etsy, my website, and at markets & conventions.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
As often as possible, please try to shop local and handmade. Support local markets. Find artists and artisans in your area. Not only will you support your local economy, you’ll wind up with a project or service that is made exclusively for you.
But shopping isn’t the only way to support creatives! Your support online is free and helps us thrive! Likes, follows, shares, and Pins are all free ways you can show your favorite creatives that you want to see them succeed.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is meeting others who I have something in common with. It might be other artists who I can relate to, or it might be clients who share my same interests. Either way it makes my life fuller and happier.
