We recently connected with Moorisha Bey-Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Moorisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As a child growing up in Southern California, I was often surrounded by the arts. My father a thespian, spent 40 years of his life writing, producing and directing plays, and my mother was always drawn to creative and cultural spaces. It was my natural inclination toward creativity, particularly Black creativity, that kept me in this ecosystem brushing shoulders with artists and learning what their legal needs and legal issues could be.
After working at a number of law firms, including one where I analyzed the intellectual property docket for Los Angeles each morning, I began to notice a pattern. “Many creators didn’t have any intellectual property protections.” I saw a gap between possession and ownership often leading to cultural appropriation and in 2019 I decided to start my own practice utilizing my legal background in service of BlPOC creatives.
Moorisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been named “Top 40 Lawyers Under 40” by the National Bar Association as an Intellectual Property and Entertainment Attorney where I work closely with creatives to bring their brands to the utmost potential. My practice is deeply woven into the fabric of the Los Angeles and LBGTQIA+ community, where I help creators on licensing deals, IP prosecution, and a variety of other contracts that affect an artist’s day to day work. My work consists of intellectual property protection, entertainment law, trademarks, copyright, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness), cease and desist, brand collaborations, and contracts. My clients include civil rights activists, social media influencers, fashion designers, athletes, visual artists, musicians and trailblazing thought leaders globally. I have spoken at the National Bar Association, American Bar Association, numerous colleges and universities: becoming a sought after resource for my thought leadership in the field of Intellectual Property Law.
I have been recognized by the California Lawyers Association (Wiley W. Manuel Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services); Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. (Outstanding Service & Leadership Award); Urban League of Los Angeles Young Professionals (Community Empowerment and Changemaker Award), and the University of California, San Diego (2008 Outstanding Senior Award). I’m also a recipient of Oregon Law’s Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. This recognition is given to law school graduates who have made significant career, leadership, or service contributions to their communities, to the School of Law and the legal profession within the first 10 years after graduation.
I’m currently serving in my fifth consecutive term on the Board of Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Inc. and also work as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Santa Monica College.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media organically through time. These connections are often people I’ve met in person and often started as an old fashioned handshake. I always say, “Authenticity is the highest currency.” I think that rings true even in digital spaces. So when I meet someone and our interests connect, I make it a habit to connect on social media as well.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Persistence, Positivity, and Forward-Thinking.
I persistently produce great results and have proven a reliable resource to my clients even in their most dire times. Showing up for my clients and always thinking about the future I can see positive outcomes that keep me persistent and pressing forward toward my goals.
