We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Moonlight Bloom a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Moonlight Bloom, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Possibly one of the most challenging yet rewarding projects we have done as a band was the recording of our most recent full length album, “Lazarus”, by ourselves. It was during July of 2022 when we rented an A-Frame cabin in the city of Crestone, Colorado and set out from our normal basement studio/rehearsal space to live and work for a week. We had the intention of writing and recording a new album. With only a few songs partially completed and a handful of half-baked ideas we surely had our work cut out for us.
The drummer of the group, Matty, was going to be leaving the band for an indefinite period of time and we wanted to make something as a reminder of all of the time and love we had put into the band together. With a departure date set, the clock began to tick and we put our plans in motion. By the time our stay in Crestone was to begin, we were more than ready to rise to the occasion. Two cars, packed with instruments and recording gear, brought us to the compound where we would hole up for the week and begin the work on the biggest challenge we had faced together.
The week went by exceedingly well. While we were wrapped in views of the mountains and the Great Sand Dunes, inspiration and creative energy was abundant and easily accessed. We transformed the cabin into our own space and used our deep trust and communication to harness the power of our unified intention. By the last day, we had recorded ten full tracks and used up all of the energy we had. The job was complete.
This project stands as a statement for us about the cycles that accompany events in our life. The beginning and ending are often the same thing, and while it may be difficult to see both at once, there will be signs there to remind us. The departure (and later return) of Matty put into motion a series of major events that lead to much growth, exploration, maturity, and an even deeper love and respect for each other in the band. With that, ‘Lazarus’ was born, and Moonlight Bloom will continue to channel the energies in our lives into the betterment and expansion of our work

Moonlight Bloom, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey friend… life is a wild animal.
Moonlight Bloom is a trio of kindred souls that have riled up the (Denver/CO) psych rock scene with joyful abandon since 2016.
We strive to create an inviting, unpredictable and heavy visceral experience through our recorded music and live performance, a space that brings us both playground joy and deep fulfillment.
Our latest LP “Lazarus” was released in June 2023 and embraces heavy feels, long form composition and utter bedlam. It is the product of change, of new and old relationships, of new and old methods melding to form fresh mischief… ultimately made of living material that will surely evolve with our live experience.
No matter how you’re tuning in, we will be there, present and ready to huck it into the unknown with you.

PS. We all met on craigslist.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We strive to always behave as our authentic selves in order to foster a greater community of musicians, fans and fellow artists here in Colorado.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing that you can change other peoples’ moods, perspectives and motivations as they experience your live and recorded art. Changing peoples’ minds and lives whether you’re in the room with them or not feels particularly powerful.
