We were lucky to catch up with Montria Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Montria , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
There have been so many meaningful projects I’ve had the privilege to work on. One recent project that has left a huge impact on me would be my first Off- Broadway Musical “Sistas.” Before this show I was doing many virtual auditions from the comfort of my home back in Maryland. With this show in particular I just submitted a virtual audition like the rest and kept going, but then I got a virtual callback. Then I got another callback in person in NY and then I was invited back to NY for Final callbacks. By the grace of God I booked the show ! This was the start of a new chapter in my life, something I had been praying for for a long time. The reason this story was so important to me, was because the story was about black women ( our stories, our lives). The message of celebrating black women and generational healing has always been so important to me and the fact that that was the first story I got to tell in NY meant the world to me and truly was in alignment with me. The women that were in this cast and the directors were absolutely incredible and have become family for life!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Montria is an actor, recording artist, singer, songwriter, and vocal coach. She has loved performing ever since she was a little girl! She was born and raised in Howard County, Maryland. She performed for various competitions and venues in the US including Winning Howard County Idol in 2013 and Silver Medalist in NAACP ACT-SO National Competition for contemporary vocals in 2016. She went on to college and obtained her bachelor’s in Fine Arts With a Concentration in Musical Theatre at Kent State University. During that time she performed in several musicals and plays. Some of her favorites included Mayme in “Intimate Apparel,” Aida in “Aida,” Lorraine in “All Shook Up,” and Leading Player in “Pippin.” Montria was then hand selected for “Be Terrific Tv” Rising Star Episode 4 in 2019! Shortly after she performed on Royal Caribbean International: Quantum of the Seas “Starwater” cast in Southeast Asia. In 2022 she starred as Tamika in her first ever Off- Broadway musical called “Sistas The Musical.” You can find all of her music on all streaming platforms. The singles available include “If I Could Love You,” “Fight,” & “Don’t Ever Let It Go.” I think a big part of my brand is healing people through music, but also pouring into the next generation. I love mentoring and teaching younger kids. Throughout the pandemic I actually music directed a couple Junior Musicals for elementary/ middle school students and it was beautiful to see them grow. I still make time to vocal coach a small group of students individually, virtually even with this crazy New York schedule because I really do believe in these kids. They bring so much joy to my life !
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
*Financial support, whether it be going to support a Broadway or Off Broadway show. Financial supporting someone you know, there’s no such thing as an amount too small or too big. *Mental check ins- the industry can be very hard and emotionally, physically, mentally very draining (although we look strong, don’t assume everything is always ok) Encouragement and checks in go a long way
*Learn a little about the theatre industry and having a little more understanding
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Healing the world through story telling and music.
