We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monteze Sutton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Monteze, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have worked as an actor, singer, writer, and director for many years. I’ve been given opportunity after opportunity at a young age but sometimes it was hard because of my age. I started MSP productions to give people (especially younger people) of all ages the opportunity to perform on stage. Since our official launch on November 12, 2021 we have had many successful projects and have allowed space for all people to grow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I had the honor of performing at the world-famous Apollo Theater in the year 2017. Since 2016, I’ve been performing as Luther Vandross in Stepp Stewart’s A Soulful Christmas. I’ve previously appeared in Atlanta Black Theater Fest plays such as The Voices of Carmen. MSP was founded to give others these type of opportunities. We produce musicals, plays and other types of performances. I’m most proud of watching my cast develop as artists under my guidance.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative in my opinion is when one of your projects first get started. It means you have something to look forward to and it should feel exciting.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the year 2018, I decided to form Theatric Arts, a theater company. Due to a lack of funding and opportunities, the project eventually failed. But we decided to relaunch . Although it was successful, the road to launching my company has not been easy. I have had a cast member quit on me and I had to also push the show back an entire week. Although these issues occurred we pushed through it and continued to practice and came up with a great product.
