We recently connected with Montez Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Montez , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first realized I wanted to pursue my dreams was when I got released from prison and I wanted to stay out but they wouldn’t hire me. I knew all I had was my ideas from prison so I started working on them to survive and provide for myself
Montez , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got out of prison and wanted to stay free and use my creativeness. First I started a lawn care to hire youth and ex felons called “ace project”. Young dudes needed something positive to do and I did to and one thing we didn’t mind was being outside so I started a lawn care business to hire the ones people wouldn’t normally hire. I had the mindset I was “born to win” . Mentally I had to be strong first to survive. During COVID I started my brand “born 2 win” with merch I was already pursuing my music . It started as shirts but people really connected to the message so we eventually blew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. It’s all about motivating our people with a positive message and being the positive role model I wish I had.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In society to support artist people should pay the prices they ask for because you don’t know what it cost to put together. Respect the art.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn how to stop chasing money but build a plan that will create money .
