We were lucky to catch up with Montez Suivant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Montez, appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I definitely feel misunderstood. However, I am to blame for that in certain areas. I’ve felt repressed in my identity. I’ve been made to feel ashamed of my sexuality and preferences. This led to me being more provocative in the past. When it came to music, freestyles, and on social media. I am a Scorpio…so I’ll give that some of the blame haha. But I’m not promiscuous. I’m closer to being a nun. It’s coming to the point where I’ve realized it really doesn’t matter what you do, or say. You can’t please everyone. And some people will always view you to be a certain way. Believe em!

Montez, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well I’m Montez Suivant. I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m very excited about what’s in the works. I definitely don’t follow any rules when it comes to making music. I can find inspiration in any and everything. I definitely owe it all to God. Thank you Jesus! But I think what sets me apart is that I’m not trying to win a race. I’m in it for the long haul. Also I love cheering on people that I’m inspired by. No need to compete. There are a couple artists that I’d love to work with very soon. Some are already in the works! I also have some bucket list of collaborators that I hope to work with one day. Sevana is an Artist from Jamaica. She’s so well-rounded. Lyrically, visually, and sound-wise she is killing it! I’m inspired by her a lot. Would be honored to write with her.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think music tends to be consumed based on what’s popular at the moment. Then it’s eaten up and discarded. The attention span is declining in the a lot of audiences. I think if we’re able to hold their attention better it will bring a more beneficial relationship between artists and supporters. Also, there tends to be a lack of support, until an artists hits superstardom. Once they’ve made that status they are loved ONLY temporarily. And after that, they are torn apart. That has to stop. People are humans. And I think creatives are a lot more sensitive. SO PLEASE BE KIND.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part about being a creative is completion. Completing a song, or an album is so rewarding.
