Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Montel Woods. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Montel , appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
One of the biggest things I wanted to touch on is how I rebranded myself as an artist. I changed my name to Montel Woods, and in the midst of this rebrand, I wish I started my career as an artist a little later. Maturing has helped me grasp who I am better and who I want to be in the creative world. I still have a long way to go but I feel like I’m heading in the right direction now.

Montel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
To those who don’t know me, I am Montel Woods, a recording artist from Flint, Michigan. Coming up in a small town with few opportunities, you start to wonder what you could do to make the best out of it. I had a love for music since a child, and with the rise of our music scene in recent years, it made me want to make my own journey towards being an artist. I make music based on what I’m feeling, but one of my biggest goals is to make fun music.
I feel that music has gotten too serious lately. The popular artists wanna beef and do all the unnecessary stuff. Then there’s the people who think rap is evil. There’s so much discourse around music right now and I just strive to make fun music that makes you bop your head and that you can turn up to. I want to embody the essence of my city. A bunch of hustlers that don’t take BS from nobody, but people who love to have fun.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This is probably one of my most embarrassing moments but it’s happened twice. I uploaded two songs on streaming services but didn’t get a single play on either. One of the harsh realities of starting out without anything but a vision. The numbers aren’t there and I have no validation for my work but I just keep pushing because of the passion I have for making music, from selecting beats to the entire recording process. It taught me to chase my dreams and push through whatever’s in my way because even if it’s a thick brick wall, God is gonna dust me off when I come through the other side.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It’s hard to speak on society as a whole so I’ll downsize it a little. Support your friends, family, or whoever’s close to you. Support your mom’s art. Support your sister’s poetry. Support your brother’s music. Often times, as artists, we just want support from those close to us but our biggest supporters end up being strangers. So that’s all I ask. Support those close to you and we can change the climate of the creative world one person at a time.
