Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monisha Jordan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Monisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
The most unexpected problem I faced in my business was not getting that support from the people I expected the most support from, when I first decided to start my business . I had close friends tell me I shouldn’t put too much focus on trying to start my business at the time because it wasn’t a guarantee thing. I procrastinated for a long time because of that. I was always worried about what people thought and when people gave me their opinion, I was the type of individual to let it get to me. I was big on getting that approval from my friends. I had to believe in myself and take that leap of faith, which I did in 2020. Im more confident now, I’ve learned to just go with the flow and grow as I go. I also learned that I have to stay more consistent and focus on what works best for me, in order to truly succeed. It was hard for me in the beginning because, one, I’m an over thinker and then I’m such a genuine and kind person when it comes to my close friends and family. I had to learn to not take it too personal. I learned that my biggest supporters came from strangers. It’s been now, almost 3 years and I can honestly say, it’s been a quite a journey. I’m still pushing and getting better day by day. I’m honestly glad I decided to believe in my self and just star
Monisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been into makeup, lashes, nails…which is basically my brand, mink lashes, customized press on nails & toes, customized Slay gloss, and even resourceful digital products. I’ve always always wanted to become an influencer. I love to make people laugh, I love to dance, I just love entertaining people. So I started focusing more on the influencer part, right after starting my business back in 2020. It’s not until i went viral on Instagram last year, where things really started to just look up for me. My business, Slay Moe and me being a pretty known influencer, goes hand to hand because my personality describes my brand. which is cute, creative, unique yet loud lol, and one of a kind. I love for my customers to feel special and glamorous. My products give people an experience, same thing with my content. I’m not your average girl, definitely extra lol, but I give that sexy, seductive, real, funny, flirtatious vibe with all my content. So when you see me or anything referring to me, then you know hey that’s The real Miss Mo, that’s Slay Moe right there. You will love it over here. When they try to stop your shine, just SLAY MOE!
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I started my business during the time we were going through that pandemic with Covid. When they were sending out checks, I used that to putchase my LLC, inventory and supplies I needed to run a business. I was also doing other side hustles like online surveys and Ibotta (which I still do)…they say a millionaire has 7 streams of income. I currently do Door Dash as well, I get paid by all my social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube & TikTok) plus I get deals and offers collabing with different companies and then of course I do promo. I’m always in my bag…I mean now a days you can make money from anything, as long as you have a phone you’re good. I feel like if you have a side hustle or hustles, invest in yourself and turn it into a business. I haven’t worked a 9-5 corporate America job in over 2 years. I love being my own boss, making my own moves and just making my own money.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn to not take everything so personal. Before I became an influencer, I learned to take other individual’s feelings into consideration, you know on sone respectful type of thing but I was quick to worry about what the next person thought of me. I had to unlearn that mindset quick because people are always judging no matter and they will always have something to say rather it’s good or bad. I had to focus more on not feeding into the bs and negativity because it would have ate me up and stressed me out. I’m still learning to not react to every little thing. It’s social media so everyone pretty much is in my business now and will always have something to say. I had to learn not to let it get to me and keep it moving.
