Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monique Mccoy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Monique , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Since a child I always knew I would pursue a career in either music or public speaking. However, during the pandemic, after years of dreaming and working a 9-5, I was pushed into my greatness as a poet. While most of the world was in a frenzy I decided to pivot. I began writing again after years of writers block. I then decided I would step into the poetry world by signing up for open mics. First of all, everything was shut down so I had to start with online open mics and once the world began to slowly come back to normal I began visiting open mics throughout the Bay Area.
Once I got comfortable and noticed the feedback that I received from my work, I started to actually believe in myself . I decided that I would pursue poetry as a career while allowing my 9-5 to fund my dreams and I’ve been a getting paid to share my Poetry for the last 6 years.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2016 I joined Toastmasters International, a personal development organization that empowers individuals to become more effective communicators.
Over the course of 3 years I was able to develop myself and improve my communication skills as a public speaker. Toastmasters has played a major role in my professional career as a Poet. I’ve won several speech contests and served various roles within my local Toastmasters club: VP of Education, VP of Membership and President. These roles really helped me find my voice and build confidence in my delivery as a speaker.
I took that knowledge and experience and applied it to my Poetry. Now I am able to work with different organizations and add value to people’s lives by the power of my words.
I am a 2x self published Author.
During the pandemic I wrote, “Get Over Yourself: Questions and Life Lessons to Help You Get Out of Your Own Way”
It’s a self development book that has short impactful chapters to help you get back on track with your purpose.
My second book is my Poetry debut: Poetry’s Daughter. This book was written in April 2024 during national poetry month.
When people hear my poetry I want them to experience a shift in their thinking and ultimately take action in their lives. Whether it’s getting out of their own way or taking a risk and pursuing their dreams.
Poetry is a ministry given to me by God. It is the vehicle that I use to deliver hope, inspiration and motivation.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Art is sacred. It’s the Artists who are on the frontlines speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves. I am crazy enough to believe that Art not only heals but is actually making the world a better place. I encourage the people to support their local Artists. Get to know the Artists in your community. Pay them the same way you’d pay the motivational speaker or musician. Hear them out. Visit the open mics and events and listen to the solutions. As creatives we add value. We are Public speakers and leaders as well. I once used poetry to petition to save the Amtrak Station in my City (Antioch Ca).

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love to leave the audience with a fresh perspective. My poetry is very introspective so It’s rewarding to hear people ask questions about how they can apply the overall message to their life.
I also love the versatility of being able to speak at public events, colleges, fundraisers and even weddings and birthday parties.
