We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monique Henry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique , thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
Back in 2005, I was an intern for Sean John NY, NY. I was placed to assist a few of the executives for the clothing line. I noticed a lot of the young ladies that started as interns in the same time frame quickly got part-time jobs. I would later find out they dishonestly tried to make their way to the “top”. When I found out how this was happening I made an exit. It was my childhood drive and passion that got me a spot to intern and I wanted to make sure that would always be the key to success in anything I would accomplish.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Before my internship with Sean John, I always wanted to help be the driving force behind Sean Combs from the age of 14 years old I knew what I wanted to do and be. I never knew how to define it at that age but as God had other plans for me I realized, I am a pusher (not street term lol). I was given the great opportunity to assist, co-direct, and push the vision of an Outreach called Women on a Mission whose Founder is Dr. Gillian Bissette. Working for the outreach is where the unfolding of my calling began. Which is to push and help bring aloud the silent greatness that I believe is deep down inside all women. If I had not allowed God to bring me through that process of giving up who I thought I was for who HE Called me to be I don’t believe I would have found the passion to help women. In the process of allowing God to have full control, The Noble Women’s Global Groups was founded. Through mentorship and a variety of programs we offer. We have had the opportunity to watch many women launch their businesses enroll in school, and pursue their God-given purpose all because of a simple YES TO GOD!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020 George Floyd was shot and killed by police officers. And I wanted us to make a statement letting the people know that we care and are there. Many people were marching, and some were protesting but in our city, nothing took place due to concerns about the violent riots. So I call the team and said hey let’s get some flyers, made and start distributing them we will March from point A to The Lauderhill City hall. As a result of that one act of getting out of our comfort zone, we were able to bring unity to the community at a time when COVID was causing division, black lives were being mishandled and the peoples’ voices needed to be heard. We were able to bring the commissioners of Lauderhill together along with The Chief of Police in Lauderhill and Sunrise. We got two cities to come together, we had the precious moment of prayer for law enforcement and the families of those who lost their lives. Channel 10 News was there to record the More Justice More Peace protest. Because of our unbiased vision, we were able to collaborate with the city of Lauderhill Police Department and set up a Workshop called KNOW YOUR RIGHTS for the youths in Lauderhill and surrounding cities. An opportunity for them to get to know law enforcement and for law enforcement to know those they in the community. This workshop lasted a month and a half and it taught the youth how to identify when their rights are being abused. We later received 3 proclamations from the city October 31 is even recognized as Pastors Kyle and Monique Henry day with the city of Lauderhill. I understand the word resilience many times is used to describe a person but I will say it’s the ability to empower others to change.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is expecting the same service I do for others to be done to me. I have aided many men and women in this journey called life, however, from experience I have learned that it does not matter how much you do for people your true reward will never come from them. It will come from you doing what you know was right to do. With that being said I had to get to a place of selflessness, doing for others just because I have the capability to do so. I had to recall this way of thinking from my thought process in order to be free from certain disappointments that may come and make sure any acts of service I freely give I am doing these acts with pure motives.
