We were lucky to catch up with Monique Fisher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Monique, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My most recently released novel is entitled, “Hot for Teacher.” It’s a Black centered rom-com where the main female character, Latrice Richardson is someone who never does anything reckless. She is convinced by her sister Nadia to have a one night stand. Latrice has the one night stand with a handsome stranger named Nathan Woodson. The two spend an incredible night together only for Latrice to discover that Nathan has just been hired as her eight-year son’s new teacher.
The idea came to me while I was watching a sketch on Saturday Night Live. The sketch featured a parent/teacher conference where the teacher and the student’s mother flirt with each other in front of her husband. The flirtation grows to such a fever pitch that they’re making out on the teacher’s desk by the time the sketch ends. It made me think that a parent/teacher romantic comedy would be fun to write.
I enjoy writing the types of books that I would like to read, in the hopes that other people will too.
Monique, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a writer since I was ten, but I didn’t think of it as a career path until college. I majored in Theatre Arts and Dance with my concentrations being in playwriting and stage direction. I pivoted from theatre into television writing before realizing that I wanted to write but I also wanted more control of my career. Novel writing became my salvation. I love that I can write what I want and release my books to the public without having to answer to anyone.
I have started my own RCU (Rom-Com Universe) with books that are part of their own series (The Richardson Sibling Trilogy, the Decadence series, etc.) and I am having so much fun writing these stories and seeing the reaction from people who have told me how much they have enjoyed my work. I recently was honored with an award nomination for best rom-com after releasing only four books. I’m just getting started and things are already going well. I can’t wait to see where my career goes next!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly, I just started following people. I’m a huge introvert but social media helps me to connect to people without feeling awkward. In addition to following people, I started conversations, I bought their books and told them when I enjoyed the story. Soon I had writers and readers following me back and by the time I released my book, I had a small following.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
It sounds simple but being myself. I’m not perfect but I am supportive and kind. I learned long ago that the best thing a person can do in any line of work is not be an asshole. No one wants to work with or support an asshole, no matter how talented they are. Even if you’re a little green, if you’re kind and fun to work with that will take you farther than skill and arrogance will.
