We recently connected with Monika Webster and have shared our conversation below.
Monika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
As a child, I always knew I wanted to make a difference when I grew up. I dreamed of starting a nonprofit organization, but at the time, I had no idea where to begin or how to fund it. I was completely clueless. What I did know, however, was that I wanted to give back to children facing difficult circumstances and in need of support.
To keep myself motivated and focused, I decided to invest in customized motivational wristbands—reminders that failure is not an option. I successfully sold them and achieved that first goal. But I wasn’t satisfied; my next mission was to raise enough funds to provide shoes for students in need.
I started at Riverview Elementary because it was one of my elementary schools. I spoke with the guidance counselor, who helped identify the student in need. That was the beginning of my very first giveaway.
From there, each student received a brand-new pair of shoes and a backpack. As my resources grew, I was able to include wristbands and socks in the giveaways. Shortly after, I created a “Chosen One Jar.” Every student who received shoes had the opportunity to pull a school from the jar, which contained the names of elementary, middle, and high schools who would be next to receive giveaways. This allowed for random schools to benefit from our efforts.
I also began accepting new and gently used shoes, which I leave with the guidance counselors at each school. They are then able to provide shoes to any student who might need them, ensuring that no child is left behind.
Monika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a deep passion for helping those in need, particularly children, because I was once that child who needed shoes. I promised myself that if I ever had the opportunity, I would give back to children facing the same struggle. While shoes may seem like a small thing to some, for me, they were everything. Having shoes that fit, and perhaps even a pair that was stylish, made all the difference in the world. It’s not just about footwear—it’s about dignity, confidence, and feeling like you belong.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A valuable lesson I had to unlearn is that a “no” from a potential sponsor or partner doesn’t mean the end of the road. It doesn’t mean I should quit or get discouraged. I’ve reached out to major shoe companies that have a history of supporting nonprofits in their respective cities. In one instance, I contacted a company here in Memphis, TN, but received no response. When I followed up with someone from their corporate office, I learned that they only partner with select nonprofits.
While this was disheartening, it reinforced the importance of persistence. Every “no” is just one step closer to finding the right fit, and the mission to support those in need doesn’t stop because of a setback.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Overcoming Rejection: In my journey to secure partnerships with major companies, I’ve faced my fair share of setbacks—rejections, unanswered emails, and learning that some companies only work with select nonprofits. These moments could have easily led me to give up, but I’ve remained undeterred. Each challenge only strengthens my resolve to push forward.
Adaptability and Perseverance: Rather than backing down, I’ve used each “no” as an opportunity to improve and grow. I’ve expanded my network, learned valuable lessons, and continued to seek out new opportunities. My drive to make a difference is unwavering, and I keep moving forward—no matter the obstacles.
A Mission That Matters: At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to helping children and elderly families in need of shoes—those who are too often forgotten or overlooked. This mission fuels my resilience, and I am more determined than ever to make a meaningful impact.
