We were lucky to catch up with Monika Demmler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Monika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally happened rather later in my path. Even though I lived as an artist when I was a kid, I didn’t start creating again until I was older. What led me to this were several happenings in my life, starting from an ex-boyfriend, a car accident, visits to several countries and most importantly meeting beautiful people who inspired me to do what I love to do . I have a feeling no matter what – life puts you on your right path.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started writing songs, painting etc. when I moved from London to Berlin. I was lucky enough to be in Berlin at a time when making a living was easy there, surrounded by a lot of creatives. It was like living in another world. We called Berlin its own country with its own rules. During the day, you worked on art/music and at night you went to shows/parties. That was our daily life. Rent was so cheap then. It was a nowadays unimaginable vibe that kept going years after the falldown of the wall.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Even though the world around us seems to be in doom and glory, I feel real and true art is appreciated again, by society or the individuals. Human beings recognize the importance of art again and the ways in which it makes them feel better. Creatives can be supported by each of us, buying true art from small artists, listening to music by their favorite artists. In my opinion, it is maybe not so much a matter of society but more of politics who need to set prerequisites and circumstances for producing great art. In that regard, I sometimes wish I’d live as an artist in the Greek Empire.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I do. And the resources are within each individual. I wish I had had the wisdom from an earlier start to believe in myself, my dreams and ideals, and the courage to follow my passion.
