Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monica Watson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Monica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I’m 100% happy and fulfilled as a business owner. It gives me so much freedom, flexibility, and most importantly – tons of time with my family. Prior to running Berlin Skin full-time, I worked in marketing, and while I loved it, it came with a lot of unwelcome stress. When I had a traditional day job, I remember often coming home from work and going straight to my bed; that’s how exhausted I was. When I had my son 3 years ago, I realized that nothing was more important than my family, and I took a leap of faith by leaving my secure job to really go for it with my business (which at the time was just a side hustle). The risk definitely paid off, and the rewards have been endless. I have so much more balance now, and I really get to design and craft the life of my dreams. I wouldn’t trade the freedom for any paycheck.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The philosophy of minimalism in skincare has been passed down for four generations of women in my family. After a long and painful struggle with cystic acne, I finally found clear skin by ultimately coming back to this value of simplicity and caring for my body in a holistic way. Once I realized that this kind of approach works wonders, I knew I wanted to share it with others.
In 2016, I started Berlin Skin with the hope of helping people transform their skin and find greater healing through a balanced, minimalist lifestyle. Berlin Skin exists to help others find healing and health for their skin, but also to inspire more peace in all aspects of their lives — including their homes.
Over the years, the brand has gained an amazing community of loyal customers and I’m proud of what we’ve built.
When I’m not running the day-to-day operations at Berlin Skin, I love traveling, dreaming, spending time with my family, and I’m always down for a nightly sauna session. I love to indulge in slow and quiet mornings, and I always prioritize making time to laugh and have fun with my people.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Trust is huge when it comes to skin care. People are afraid to try new products, especially in the personal care space. To this day we have done very little advertising, and our brand’s success has come through word-of-mouth marketing. When someone is in love with a product(s), they will naturally tell all their friends about it. Especially if it has transformed their skin, they want others to know. Although this is a slower growth model, I’ve always believed that the products speak for themselves and it’s never been a hard sell. We have thousands of “super fans” and this is how our brand has grown. On top of the product quality, I have always believed in building and fostering relationships: this comes through truly caring about people and always being generous. People buy from people, and I think a lot of people have resonated with my story and the care and intentionality that we put into the brand.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first launched Berlin Skin, we started with 3 products. I was running the business from my kitchen table. I was working late into the night, getting ready for our first pop up the very next day, and I suddenly realized that one of our batches was off: something had gone terribly wrong. I remember feeling so discouraged as I had worked months and months to get this thing off the ground. I honestly wanted to quit in that moment. But I was able to push through the resistance, realizing that this wasn’t going to be the only problem that I would ever face – and I kept the end goal in mind. Since then, there have been so many obstacles and roadblocks that have come my way, and I always think back to this story because it reminds me that running a business takes grit. No one is keeping you accountable except yourself, and if it was easy, everyone would do it.
