We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monica Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Monica, appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
TenFiftySeven Media Group was started by myself, and my two business partner’s at the beginning of 2022. My son was heading off to college, so the life I had been living for the past 18 years was changing. He was planning his next chapter and so was I, not having any idea what a fun but crazy ride this would be. As I stated we started TenFiftySeven Media at the beginning of 2022 with the middle of that same year giving the option to bring back the Christian Country Magazine…Power Source Magazine.
I think if the opportunity to make this business journey had arrived earlier in life, I would not have been able to put my whole self into the growth of TenFiftySeven Media. If it can at a later time in my life, I do believe I would have declined offering only to help my two business partners as I could. To summarize, I think TenFiftySeven Media was started at the best time of my life and I am enjoying this season of my life.
Monica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
TenFiftySeven Media is a music industry promotional and branding source. Artist marketing can be summarized as the work of developing a brand around the persona of the artist and building an avid fan base. Drawing positive attention to an artist is key to using a collaborated plan of social media engagement, music distribution, and marketing attributes equal to that of a startup business.
Inspirational music artist marketing includes the vision, calling, and passion around the ministry of the artist. The key element is flexible use of the avenues which will open the paths for an artist to share their gift.
The TenFiftySeven Media Group specializes in the use of the tools to power the passion of Inspirational Music Artistry. Offering customized branding for the ministry, the music, and the artist.
Additionally, we have Power Source, A TenFiftySeven Media Magazine. This industry publication is the home of the Power Source Christian Country Chart and the leading source in industry connections and news. Published monthly and contains something for all readers, not just industry professionals.
My professional and personal history up to this point has been typical of most women. I did the jobs to pay the bills, take care of the family, and make memories with my husband and kids…then my kids decided to grow up on me!
It all changed when my boys started their own walks in life, while the parenting or memory-making continues, it brought the question of “what next.” The series of events that transpire are hard to describe, it is the connections that didn’t make sense before suddenly coming together.
Today, sitting with a partnership in three companies, I am either the craziest woman ever or the woman who has finally followed the passions of my heart for years and somehow they all come together to make sense. If I am just the craziest, I am not alone as my partners are riding right along. With my close friend, CeCe Owens, we have Scattered South, an event/design/marketing company. Added to that, CeCe and my sister, Mandy Hall created TenFiftySeven Media, a music industry promotions company. If that wasn’t enough – last year TenFiftySeven Media acquired Power Source Magazine.
So today, I am still a wife, mom, daughter, sister, and friend, and added the multi-business owner. Yep, that is certainly proof of the crazy. It is stressful yet fulfilling, overwhelming yet miraculous and most of all it allows me to daily watch God move in amazing ways in it all.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Having the diagnosis with dyslexia since childhood created a “thing” that sits in my mind distracting me from personal confidence. It is also something that those closest to me are aware of, which at times can trigger insecurities. I could speak in paragraphs and pages on overcoming dyslexia, let me say in a sentence my advice to all dealing with this or any other obstacle…It is not about others, it is about you, get to know yourself – if I didn’t take a hard look at my limits, how would I know what to cover or overcome? It is not a lack of ability or intelligence – it is about how I acquire information to process it. Now it is not about my limits, but about my limitlessness.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I think I have two of the best business partners that one could be lucky to work with. I met Cece Owens about 4 years ago as she was interviewing me for a job. Through those 4 years, as we worked hand and hand for weddings and events, a friendship grew. Moving onto my next business partner, this one I have know a lot longer, like my whole life. Mandy Hall is my sister. Growing up we were sisters who got along sometimes but we also knew how to fight a lot. I think we are the reason for most of our parents gray hair.
Each one of us have a different talent , when you mix them all together we achieve great things. We each know our skills and have what we call ‘our lane’ and we don’t cross over to the other’s lane unless asked. I am very thankful to get to work with these amazing ladies.
