Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monica Rue. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Monica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path early on,when I was a little girl. I saw the joy that my mother brought to sooo many people from her beautiful seamstress work, myself included and I wanted to bring joy to others similarly!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started working with fiber art as a young child. Embroidery, crocheting and knitting. It started small with people asking if they could pay me for making custom baby clothes and matching blankets. At first I used whatever was the best price and then as I honed my touch I went with more higher quality fibers and now I hand spin my own yarns from beautiful fibers. I make hand knit and crocheted items from my own imagination. Simple to extravagant designs depending on the clientele and their likes and desires.
I hand dye fibers for those that want to buy one of a kind yarns as well as rovings and hand blended art batts for people who enjoy hand spinning their own yarns too! I have something for just about everyone. I specialize in bright colors, festive patterns and sparkly designs. I want my designs to be comfortable and fun. Kid fun but with adult style. Designs that will fit all body types, shapes and sizes. Some of my biggest sellers are my hand made aprons for adults and children. I’m always looking for new fabric patterns to mix and mingle. Ruffles, pockets and straps that fit from my petite size to my husband’s size and every size in between! My next biggest sellers are my art yarns both the hand spun and the hand dyed.
One of the most important things to me is to make sure that everything I make is made with love. Meaning I don’t create when I am feeling angry or sad. My heart truly goes into every item I make and thats why Monica Rue Design’s brand motto is “Big or small, all will be covered in love.” And I take that to heart. So when you buy something from me know that it was created with an amazing abundance of love and care. Something that only hand made can produce and I will strive to continue that quality of work as long as I can by myself. And when I get bigger anyone who works for me will have the same value system for my special creations.
My mission is to continue creating beautiful and unique styles of accessories, clothing, fibers art and functional fashion and share it will the world while teaching the next generation of designers through my work at an elementary school.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding things about being a designer and a fiber artist is meeting customers who see in my designs, what I see. They get soo excited about items that some even do a “happy dance” when they purchase a handmade item from me. That makes my heart sing!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For me I keep things real. I share my heart with my followers and encourage an environment of people who have mutual respect and support each other. It’s about being a village and building positive relationships! It’s not about competing with each other. There’s plenty of space for all creatives! We all have our place in the world and negativity is not the way to spend our days and nights! I’m about creating a space of joy and color and uniqueness.
My advice would be to stay true to who you are and what your style is. Fads come and go ,but finding your niche is something that should be cherished and honored! We have to do that for ourselves before others will do that for us!
