Yes, I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work. The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I started with a passion for storytelling and a determination to turn that passion into a career. Initially, it wasn’t a full-time endeavor. I balanced various side jobs while working on my creative projects during my free time.
A significant turning point came when I was paid for directing a short film. This project not only validated my skills but also provided a substantial boost to my confidence and credibility in the industry. Directing the short film was a comprehensive experience; I was involved in every aspect, from pre-production planning, script development, casting, and directing, to post-production editing. The success of this film opened doors for more opportunities and collaborations.
Reflecting on my journey, the key milestones included gaining formal education in TV/Radio, Filmmaking, Communications, Media, and Business Administration, which equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge. Starting Brand Xperts Creative Labs was another significant step. This venture allowed me to channel my creativity into various projects, from music videos and short films to commercials and documentaries.
An important aspect of my journey has been the flexibility in how I received compensation. In the early stages, I often exchanged services as a form of payment. This barter system not only helped me build a portfolio but also established valuable relationships and networks within the industry. For example, I might direct a music video for an artist in exchange for them composing a score for one of my short films.
