We were lucky to catch up with Monica Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Monica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
Firstly, I gave at least 5 full-sized products for free to about 27 potential customers to let them try and see, in real time, the change in their skin to, hopefully, get honest feedback on the success rate of each item. Once I saw some people placing orders of their favorites, I began including free pieces to let them try or double their order to show appreciation. It has maintained a consistent relationship.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Safi Simply Decadent, LLC was a brainstorm in 2016 when I began making homemade face masks. I love natural remedies so what started with a mask made from charcoal, honey and bentonite clay followed with a facial toner of tea tree, green tea and witch hazel. Once I got my little sister to try she loved how it cleared up acne flair ups. I became intrigued to make more things and started testing them with family and friends which garnered a lot of requests for more. It took me three years to finally get the courage to get an LLC.
To date, I’ve heard my Tea Tree Toner does wonders for eczema and acne prone skin and is one of my favorites, also. The scents of my products are the second thing people mention. So much so I’ve been told its an aphrodisiac, lol. What makes me proudest and what I’d like to convey to any new clients is that this is literally my baby. I truly believe in my brand because I use it every single day and wouldn’t recommend using it if I didn’t.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
As like before, yes, I fund myself. I use my personal capital to purchase everything. Until I see more movement in sales, I just can’t bring myself to go for a loan that will bring me in debt. I use my business losses from tax season and all profits from sales to stay afloat. From ingredients to packaging to postage, I make sure Safi gets to its new home!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
To add to the above answer, this also means it is hard to maintain positivity when sales run low. I find strength in affirmations and a positive outlook that Safi will succeed and be in everyones beauty regimen one day. A household name yet to become! I have to remind myself Rome wasn’t built in a day.
