We recently connected with Monica Mance and have shared our conversation below.
Monica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
One thing that helps me to stand out from the rest is by being authentic- and my followers and subscribers have noticed! There have been so many instances where I have given my opinion about a particular product or brand, even if it differs from popular opinion, and my followers always come back to thank me for my honest opinion. Recently I reviewed a new fragrance from a very popular brand on my YouTube Channel. The brand happens to be one of my favorite brands, but I was underwhelmed with the performance of this particular fragrance, and decided to share my honest opinion with my audience, I had a viewer comment that this one of the reasons she loves my content- because of my honesty and authenticity. This is a bug win for me, especially in a time where people are distrustful of influencers due to sponsorships.
Monica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Monica Mance, but my audience knows me as AllThings MoElle. I create content centered around all things beauty-related, from haircare and skincare to fragrance and fashion. I have always had a love for hair, styling in particular. Even as a young girl I was always known as that one friend who knew how to really do hair, which carried me throughout college and graduate school. In my young adulthood I became serious about caring for my natural hair, and people would start to come up to me and ask “what products are you using?” or “how did you style your hair like that?” So in 2019 I made the decision to start making hair content on social media (Instagram and YouTube) sharing my thoughts on products and how to properly care for hair. Fast forward to now, my audience has grown significantly (around 5,600 subscribers on YouTube, 2,000 followers on Instagram, and 1,000 followers on TikTok). The growth of my audience has allowed me to explore other niches in the beauty industry, like fashion, skincare, makeup and hygiene. I have also had the opportunity to create content for several haircare brands, skincare brands, and even recently did a collaboration with a teeth whitening brand! Even though this has somewhat become a second career for me, I am super passionate about what I do as a content creator. My hope is that this passion translates in all the content I create, and that I can inspire more people to embrace their passions as well (and look and feel their best while doing so)!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a creative is watching the things (content) that I create touch the loves of other people. As a content-driven creative (especially in beauty), it can seem that the market is oversaturated which can be a little discouraging at times. But, every time a follower or subscriber comes back to leave a comment, or send a private message telling me how I helped them gain back confidence through a product recommendation or tutorial, I know that I am meant to be doing what I’m doing, no matter how many other people are doing it!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media a few ways. First, I did research on what was trending in my particular niche of beauty. This helped me to create content that I knew my audience would want to watch, based on what the trends said. Then as I would post I would use relevant hashtags to increase my chances of showing up on a non-follower’s “explore” page or “for you” feed. If I talked about a specific product in any of my posts, I would tag the brand so that the brands could be exposed Tony content (leading to potential re-shares on their social media pages and widening my exposure!). I also built online rapport with other creatives who are in my niche, by engaging with their content (liking and commenting on their posts, sharing their content, etc.). This rapport led to me collaborating with more popular influencers and content creators, who exposed me to their audiences (who then began to follow me as well!).
