We were lucky to catch up with Monica Lo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Monica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Hi! I’m Monica Lo, the creator of the cannabis blog, Sous Weed, and author of The Weed Gummies Cookbook. My journey into the world of cannabis started in 2015 when I was dealing with a herniated disc and sciatica. The opioids my doctor prescribed weren’t working for me, and I wanted to try a gentler, more holistic approach to pain management—something that aligned with my upbringing around traditional Chinese remedies.
I decided to try cooking with cannabis, but with a strict landlord and a no-smell policy, I had to get creative. I worked at a sous vide company at the time and thought, “Why not sous vide my weed?” It was the perfect solution—sealing cannabis and oil in a bag and cooking it underwater allowed me to make my own pain-relief medicine discreetly and effectively.
Since then, Sous Weed has evolved into a platform that demystifies cannabis-infused cooking for the canna-curious and for anyone seeking wellness and pain relief through cannabis. My mission is to show just how easy it can be to incorporate cannabis into everyday cooking—whether through my blog’s recipes or through my cookbook. I focus on approachable, safe, and effective methods to empower people to make their own infused foods at home without the intimidation factor.
Monica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since launching Sous Weed, my work has expanded well beyond recipes. While sharing approachable cannabis-infused dishes remains a core part of my mission, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with cannabis brands on everything from creative direction and branding to recipe development and photography.
My background in advertising as an art director and designer played a big role in this evolution. It turns out that Sous Weed became the perfect blend of my creative and culinary skill sets—allowing me to combine my passion for storytelling, design, and food.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A key goal driving my creative journey with Sous Weed is to make cannabis edibles more accessible and cost-effective. During the COVID pandemic, edible sales skyrocketed as more people turned to gummies and candies over inhalable forms of cannabis. However, rising dispensary prices, strict dosage regulations, and added preservatives often limit consumers’ options—especially for those seeking cannabis for wellness and pain relief.
That’s why I’m passionate about encouraging people to make their own edibles at home. DIY edibles offer more control over dosage, ingredients, and freshness while saving money. Through my blog, The Weed Gummies Cookbook, and my creative projects, I hope to show just how easy it is to create your own cannabis-infused foods and take the intimidation out of the process.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing how my work can inspire and empower others. There’s nothing quite like hearing from someone who cooked from my blog or my cookbook and realizing how easy cannabis-infused cooking can be. That feedback—whether it’s a simple “I made this!” message or a story about how a recipe helped them manage pain or stress—means everything to me.
I love creating a space where people feel confident exploring cannabis as part of their wellness routine. Being able to connect with others, share knowledge, and contribute positively to the community makes it all worthwhile.
