We were lucky to catch up with Monica Kornblum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Monica , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
At Language Lions, our mission is to improve children’s communication by finding their strengths & empowering their development. I grew up always wanting to help others, but especially children. I knew that I would become a teacher/educator of some kind and fell in love with Speech Pathology after watching my brother go through therapy for his /R/ sound. I saw firsthand how having a communication impairment can affect a child’s self-esteem. I also saw how much confidence a child can have from mastering his/her goals. At Language Lions, I feel that I truly live out my mission every single day by helping children so that they can reach their full potential and succeed!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Absolutely! I became a Speech-Language Pathologist about 11 years ago, which is wild because it feels like yesterday. I am passionate about what I do and am always learning. I recently have been learning about Gestalt Language Learners. I started Language Lions in 2020 while I was finishing a semester working in the public schools. I opened Language Lions full time in 2021 and began hiring my team of therapists in 2022. Language Lions provides speech therapy at schools, daycares, ABA centers, and homes. I love traveling to the families I work with because I love coaching parents and giving one-on-one support. I am most proud of the relationships that I have built with the families and schools that I work with. I love being a resource and support for them. At Language Lions, we prioritize family.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I honestly believe that my company has been successful because I have focused on building relationships and loving people. I have always been a huge people person and I simple love being around people. Because of this, my company has been passed around mostly from word of mouth. By being my authentic self, I am able to find families that need a therapist who not only listens, but cares and wants the best for them. When I show up, I am fully present and ready to provide the best therapy that I can give.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I think that in order to manage a successful team (whether small or large), it is crucial to set clear expectations, follow up with what you say, apologize when you are wrong, and prioritize their health and well-being. I always set aside time to be available when any of my team members need to talk and I listen to them. Open and clear communication is vital. Encouraging my team and providing feedback when I can has also really helped strengthen my team. I also am very transparent and try to be as open and honest as I can be.
