We recently connected with Monica Behan and have shared our conversation below.
Monica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I got the job in running a skincare brand (Modicum Skincare) because I created it out of necessity. I was our in British Columbia about 10 years ago and and was on a snowmobile on the glacier and my ski-doo crashed over 30 feet down into a crevasse. I had several broken bones and lacerations on my face. When I was recovering I was looking for something to help diminish the scarring. Nothing I tried on the market worked. So I started to dive deep into my own research to discover what the skin cells needed to support this. I knew it had to be plant based because I believe so much in the power of plants and natures healing abilities. It is how I lived most of my life when it comes to health and wellness, I put my credence into natures gifts. It ended up creating a serum for this and along with helping to diminish the scar tissue, my skin never looked better and friends and family were commenting on it. I started making what is now called Modicum Essential Serum for friends and it was an obvious decision for me to make it available for the general public. My intention was to have a product that was organic, plant based and considered a prestige product and make it available at an affordable price. So that’s how it started.
Monica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up my mother was committed to raising our family with healthy food and avoided any pharmaceutical drugs for medicine. Being raised this way, along with my nascent interest in natural medicine, along with the necessity after my accident were the great influencers in the creating of Modicum Skincare. I had to self educate and I was constantly reading books and studies on the what plants had the most beneficial nutrients for our skin cells. Plants and skin cells are comprised of the same structure and therefore are bodies are much more receptive to the healing constituents of plants then foreign chemicals. I was committed to using only organic raw materials because of the damaging effects that pesticides have on our endocrine system and overall health. From there I wanted the brand to be about healthy lifestyle because I believe the health of our skin is about our overall health and not just affected by what we put on our bodies. Its about what we chose to put into our bodies as well as how we treat our bodies. I am excited to inspire others to practice being self compassionate with acts of self love and self care as well as finding there true joy. Joy is a big part of our health and I want to be an inspiration to others to find it in every way they can. There are so many brands out there. We should chose the ones that we feel we are part of a like minded, like hearted community of.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Since I was 7 years old I knew I wanted to be a musician. (singer/songwriter). It was all I ever worked towards as far as a career. Then I lost my recording contract and things were changing in the music industry with streaming music and not getting royalties for your airplay and record sales. It was becoming hard for musicians to make a good living. I felt it was time to seek out something different. I had always designed my own clothing for performing and I started working on a small clothing line. I didn’t know that it was going to go anywhere but it did. It was called Goretti and I was based out of LA. I did a deep dive into self education of the fashion industry, textiles ect. Books upon books. Magazines from Japan, and France, which have always been the most fashion forward to me. I found an incredible pattern maker, which is the most important part of design, the execution. I feel that always being a seeker is so important in our lives. We may not always know what our next step is or next career move is, but as long as we constantly keep our enthusiasm and we seek and learn, we will inevitable end up someplace good.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that sometimes things change that we don’t have any control over. We may have strong vision of where we are going and tunnel vision, but then something can occur that changes our trajectory, and when it does its best to release our grip and practice resilience until we find our new way.
