We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Monica Baddar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Monica below.
Hi Monica, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am completely self-taught. Early on, I realized that charisma was essential—something that didn’t come naturally to me, as I grew up very shy. The turning point was understanding that my subjects were the ones in a vulnerable position, and it was my job to put them at ease. In many ways, I see myself as more of a therapist than a photographer.
Photographing people requires patience, awareness, and discernment. It’s about reading energy—sensing subtle shifts and capturing them at just the right moment. This work is deeply social; building and maintaining connections, both in real life and online, is just as important as mastering the technical side.
Over time, I came to see photography as a spiritual practice. For years, I didn’t realize it, but photography is about directing and shaping energy. Every shoot has a moment where everything aligns—the “magic zone” or “flow state”—where thought disappears and only creation remains. That’s the secret sauce I chase every time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a fashion and portrait photographer working between NYC and LA, with 15 years of experience helping brands create compelling content and launch successful campaigns. My work has appeared on billboards in New York City and has been featured in major fashion publications, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Elle, GQ, and Tatler.
My journey into photography began in my late teens, when I would style my friends, take them to different locations, and recreate the fashion editorials that inspired me. What drew me in was the fantasy—the ability to step beyond everyday reality and craft something beautiful, entirely on my own terms. When I look through the viewfinder, the world quiets, and only the image remains.
What sets my work apart is my vision. I have a deep ability to recognize and draw out the strength, sensuality, and light in my subjects—capturing not just their image, but their essence.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my job is getting to know people. I’m deeply drawn to human connection and storytelling—everyone has a unique story, and I love discovering and capturing it. Beyond that, the entire creative process, from vision to execution, is incredibly fulfilling. Planning a shoot takes time, and seeing a team come together, collaborating to bring an idea to life, is always inspiring. There’s nothing quite like witnessing the magic of collective creativity unfold.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation is my responsibility. It’s up to me to be proactive—taking meetings, building relationships, and staying engaged. Being reliable and present is essential in this industry. At the end of the day, people may forget what you say or do, but they will never forget how you make them feel. I also make the most of free marketing tools like Instagram, which has been invaluable for showcasing my work and connecting with talent. A significant portion of my opportunities come through Instagram.
