We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monet Wright a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Monet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Yes, that is a no-brainer. As a creative, it is imperative to go on vacation. I have been making changes in my business model that allow me to be very flexible. with a more personable and curated approach to my services, I can rely on my reputation, referrals, and the power of AI to keep things flowing while I rejuvenate. Also, let’s not forget I am a designer so travel can usually be used for work purposes, regarding content, planning, ideation/inspiration phases, and retreats.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Art and creativity have always been in my essence. I was a student-athlete until college but I always expressed my creativity through painting, drawing, and fashion. Actually, before that, my mom opened the doors for me. She named me Monet. She also kept a framed Claude Monet print in my room as a child. I don’t think I looked at the artist til I was about 15, shamefully. So I can honestly say I was introduced to impressionism by my mother, who named me Monet and gave me one of the most beautiful reminders. Shout out to Donna Bradley!
I obtained a Double Degree from the University of Maryland College Park, in Studio Art and Communication Studies. Melding communication and art to create the ultimate understanding of visual expression in all forms. Truly, I believe that is what sets me apart from most designers,
Today, I am a Senior Graphic Designer for The Partnership of Southern Equity, and a Creative Designer/ Brand Manager, and Ideation Facilitator for MeliMediMedi. I began my professional creative journey as an Art educator for Prince George’s County Schools, in Maryland. I moved into architectural art in 2017 and lastly into 3D design and fabrication before I was laid off in 2020 due to COVID-19. After being laid off for the majority of the year I relocated to Atlanta, to start over.
The last three years have been interesting, to say the least, but in that time I created a self-help journal, received my UX/UI certificate, obtained a Senior Designer role, and developed new entrepreneurial goals. My main goal is establishing myself in Atlanta, as a multifaceted creative consultant for small businesses and non-profits.
Relocating due to the pandemic was bitter-sweet. I did not want to leave the DMV area but I felt I needed to grow as a person, professional, artist, and woman. When I first came to Atlanta I worked on a print press as a graphic tech, creating ink formulas and dispensing/matching hundreds of pounds of ink, during a 12-hour, overnight shift. It was a fascinating job, I met some very cool people, but the position was hard, but I went harder, so I most definitely got the job done.
While I was working full-time overnight, I was in school for six months. So, I was working 7pm-7am and studying 9am-5pm. Yes, a true struggle for 6 months and it was worth it. Plus, I can say I survived it.
Professionally I design and brand strategize. Designing is in everything I do. From a social media campaign to a 5 million dollar conference spread, I am confident the job will get done. I love to work with small businesses and non-profits, I have so many ideas it is a blessing for me to help others realize their potential as well as bring that potential idea into actualization. On a creative note, I work in photography and styling. Fiber arts, Up-cycling, painting, and sculpting are mostly the mediums I prefer in my free time. I love to work with my hands the most.
Currently, I am most proud of my evolution in digital art. That industry is so mixed and matched it is hard to figure out where you want to land. There is programming, UxUi, animation, software architecture, and much more. Plus not only do you need to design, you need to know marketing strategies and SEO as well. I’d rather stay on the creative direction side of the design industry, even though I do have that knowledge base, I feel as though compensation does not match the job description. So, If I am going to wear all those hats I would rather do it for my own endeavors, respectfully.
Most beginners in business could use guidance on branding aspects that make the setup of social, marketing, and B2B assets seamless. These assets create a strong foundation to build on for any brand. I help convey your brand message and voice which in turn guide brand standards and strategy.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Honestly, I believe my authenticity has gotten me this far. Complete authenticity and genuineness have helped grow my clientele and get my name out there. My name may not ring bells yet, but I am slowly but surely getting here, My road has been bumpy but those experiences have given me the expertise, confidence, and endurance to complete any task and see any vision through to actualization. Being transparent with clients helps eliminate guesswork as well as helps you to meet them where they are. Honesty is also a great gateway to ideas and sets everyone up for a realistic planning and execution timeline.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I usually interact with clients on socials to stay up to date on what my clients have going on overall. Forecasting is a great way to foster brand loyalty. Predicting what clients may need before they know they need it, for example, social media kits for drops or events, ad graphics for incoming lines or sales, content capturing, etc. Treating clients like a priority will 100% build on client relations and loyalty.
