We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mona Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mona, thanks for joining us today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
Hi, my name is Mona L. Scott. I am Dance Movement Therapist & Senior Wellness Practitioner. I gave myself the latter title after realizing that I had been servicing seniors in wellness activities over the past ten years. I have done so in specialized rehab centers, self-contained facilities, parks & recreation centers programs as well; as performing arts centers, in around the metro Atlanta, Texas & New York area. I published two books for adults and seniors to help them stay engaged in continued personal growth.
Now, after sharing all of this; the point of the article is to present how my life has been impacted by my work with seniors and how it really began. I said ten years but, it actually began when I was a teen. I visited an elder family member weekly, whom was fondly called Mr. Chris. I would go and we would talk, play games or help with a little house work. Mr. Chris was an amputee, but was quite independent. He really needed someone to just sit quietly with him or occasionally talk.
As an adult, I realized that I was drawn to working with active seniors because of my visitation with Mr. Chris. In so doing, I developed a special wellness program for seniors that covers brain games (maintaining cognition & socialization), flexibility& balance (a fall prevention classes) and the Expressive Arts (creative writing, art and dance). I meet with at least six groups a week and I leave with joy in my heart, because they keep me laughing from the hilarious statements or body movements they may present. I have facilitated this program after semi retiring four years ago and have witnessed great growth in all of the participants. They have either share my fall prevention with others in the community or have purchased games for family get togethers. Some have shared that they were able to prevent themselves from falling by using the techniques I taught them. Others have begun to write their own story. So, you’re never too old to make progress in something new.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, I would choose the same profession and specialty. It has helped me grow in understanding how people navigate through life and has helped me maintain a sense grounding in uncomfortable situations. both personally and professionally. Through the eyes of seniors I see that nothing needs to be rushed or get overly excitable about.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I feel outside of my training just being able to be myself in the room. Not hold expectations for what is going to happen. The experience is the lesson.
