We were lucky to catch up with Mona Lott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mona, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned to do what I do primarily through hands-on experience and a commitment to continuous improvement. In the beginning, I studied performers I admired, took note of their strengths, and applied what I learned to my own work. Over time, I gained valuable insights through trial and error—performing, producing shows, and refining my approach to both entertainment and event management.
If I could have sped up the learning process, I would have taken more classes early on, particularly in areas like performance techniques, costuming, and event production. Additionally, spending more time with seasoned entertainers who offered guidance would have been invaluable. Their experience and advice could have helped me avoid common mistakes and provided a clearer path to improving both my craft and the business side of what I do.
The most essential skills for what I do include adaptability, creativity, and organization. Adaptability is crucial because events rarely go exactly as planned; being able to adjust in the moment keeps everything moving smoothly. Creativity is at the core of performance—whether it’s developing unique concepts, designing costumes, or engaging an audience. Organization ties it all together; managing schedules, budgets, and communication ensures a successful production.
The main obstacles I faced early on were a lack of resources and self-doubt. Drag and event production can be expensive, and limited access to materials or venues presented challenges. Additionally, overcoming imposter syndrome was essential—I had to remind myself that progress takes time and every step forward builds experience.
Ultimately, the journey taught me that persistence, preparation, and a willingness to learn are key to growth and success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mona Lott, and I’m a seasoned entertainer, show producer, and founder of Lott Entertainment, specializing in dynamic drag shows and unforgettable events. With over seven years of performance experience and four years producing my own shows, I also serve as the show director for the Shooting Stars Cabaret, a mainstage event during Atlanta Pride. Most recently, I founded Equality Fest, a local 501c3 nonprofit in Gainesville, GA, dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and other minorities through inclusive events and outreach.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach—I manage everything from concept to execution, ensuring events run seamlessly while providing a platform for performers to shine. I’m proud of the trust I’ve built with clients and the inclusive spaces I’ve created that bring people together.
At Lott Entertainment, we’re dedicated to delivering high-quality, engaging, and stress-free entertainment for private events, public venues, and community-focused programs. My work is driven by a passion for connection, creativity, and making every experience memorable. Whether it’s through entertainment or community-driven initiatives like Equality Fest, I’m committed to celebrating diversity, fostering connection, and creating lasting impact.
If you’re looking for an event that’s tailored, professional, and full of energy, I’d love to work with you.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I found myself performing in spaces where the art of drag wasn’t respected—by the venues or the audiences. It left me feeling disconnected from my purpose and passion. So, I decided to pivot. I created my own events and built spaces where drag could be celebrated, where I could reconnect with my love for the art, and where others could flourish alongside me. It was the best move I ever made, and it reignited the reason I started doing drag in the first place.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to create spaces where people feel seen, celebrated, and inspired. It’s about connecting with others through my art, evoking emotions, and fostering a sense of community. Knowing that what I create can make someone feel empowered or give them a moment of joy reminds me why I do this. It’s not just about expressing myself—it’s about uplifting others along the way.
